I graduated from the following program in 2009. I feel it can provide a good background in the field for people who want to work with people with disabilities in developing countries to support them in their struggle for human rights and to escape poverty. The most valuable course for me personally was a course in project design that helped me gain more confidence in my ability to evolve a clearly focused project idea and develop it into a cohesive plan of action.

Do you want to work with persons with disabilities in developing countries in ending the discrimination, stigmatization and exclusion they endure in violation of their guaranteed human rights? Imagine yourself becoming the expert to implement policies and practices inclusive of people with disabilities within federal agencies, international organizations and non-governmental organizations and in their overseas development assistance programs?

The Master of Arts degree in International Development at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC focuses on advocating for and with persons with disabilities. The program’s coursework is taught through a transformative lens where political, social and development issues become a means through which ID graduates study topics, such as, the latest global trends and issues concerning disability and development, gender, models of disability, the micropolitics of development, the design of sustainable and effective development projects and programs, and economic development. Your two years of coursework includes a practicum placement at one of several Washington, DC agencies, as well as an internship overseas using the skills you will learn through your coursework at Gallaudet and the international experiences you will be exposed to in our nation’s capitol.

The United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD), in partnership with Atlas Corps, has made available one fellowship position to work with USICD in Washington, DC for one year, beginning in September 2010. This is an exciting opportunity for a mid-career professional from another country, working in the nongovernmental sector, to spend a year working in Washington working and learning with our organization in areas such as advocacy, program development and nonprofit administration. Their experience will be further enriched by the professional development activities that occur throughout their placement, provided by Atlas Corps.

About Atlas Corps Fellowship

Atlas Corps coordinates the rigorous selection process as well as logistics including living stipend, visa, flight, health insurance, taxes, and end of service award. The Host organization pays a cost share that covers a percent of the expenses.

This is a unique opportunity to receive a talented, mid-career, citizen sector (nonprofit/NGO) leader from overseas who is recruited specifically for your organization. Host applications are accepted year round. The fellowship program runs a fall class from September to August and a spring class from March to February.

Host Benefits:
• The Host organization receives a full-time, yearlong, international Fellow who is a leader in the nonprofit/NGO sector with 3-10 years of relevant experience. The average Atlas Corps Fellow is 28 years old, is fluent in English, and has a bachelor’s or master’s degree. (Volunteers going to Bogota are also fluent in Spanish.)

Job Summary: The United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) is looking for an Atlas Corps Fellow to serve in the Washington, DC area.
USICD’s mission is to catalyze and help focus the energy, expertise and resources of the US disability community and the US government to optimize their impact on improving the lives and circumstances of people with disabilities worldwide, and to be an active member of the global disability rights movement. The selected fellow will join a groundbreaking organization supporting the rights of people with disabilities in the US and abroad.

As a member of a small team and working under the direction of the Executive Director, the Atlas Corps Fellow will have a working and learning experience with USICD. The Fellow will provide integral support to the administrative and programmatic functions of the organization, to include:

• Assisting the Executive Director with various administrative tasks related to operating a U.S.-based nonprofit organization
• Assisting the program management staff in implementing various USICD initiatives in the areas of CRPD education and global disability rights information dissemination

• Has at least basic awareness of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities treaty -OR- the universal human rights framework in general
• Has some first-hand experience in the disability community, as a family member, advocate, or self-identified person with a disability
• Has developed skills speaking, presenting/teaching, and writing in English
• Has strong computer and internet use skills; experience with web publishing or content management a plus

A commitment to the advancement of people with disabilities and knowledge of disability cultures in the United States and internationally are desirable. First-hand experience with disability preferred.

Program information

1. THE COURSE

Applied Sign Language Studies brings together the study of sign language and deaf communities with areas of study in applied linguistics, such as first and second language acquisition, bilingualism, language planning and policy, and language pedagogy. Graduates will work as sign language teachers, professionals in the field of language support for deaf people, teaching assistants in deaf education, and interpreter trainers.

The course is designed specifically to be accessible for deaf students and is taught through sign language. “Learning by doing” is included in work placements, lab work, and experiential modules. Deaf students without standard secondary school qualifications can take a one-year preparatory course (“Foundation Entry”) and continue with the BA course afterwards.

The BA in Applied Sign Language Studies is a joint international initiative. The course was developed at the International Centre for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies in the UK and will be taught at the Indira Gandhi National Open University in New Delhi, India. The beginning of the programme in 2009 is subject to validation.

2. THE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Deaf Empowerment Foundation is providing scholarships for deaf students in the preparatory Foundation Entry course in the 2009/2010 academic year.

Scholarships for Indian students
These cover one year of tuition fees at Rs. 10,000 and are available to Indian nationals. Students from other developing countries may also be eligible and should confirm their status when applying.

Scholarships for international students
These cover one year of tuition fees at ₤1,500 and are available to non-Indian students. This includes all students from industrialised countries and certain categories of students from developing countries other than India. The latter should confirm their status when applying.

Scholarships are for tuition fees only and do not cover travel, accommodation or living expenses.

Training Opportunity: Disability and Development Module, November 23 to December 19, 2009, VU University, Netherlands

Disability and Development Module at the VU University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Athena Institute, Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences, VU University (Amsterdam), together with Enablement (Alphen aan den Rijn) and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT, Amsterdam) are pleased to announce a 4-week module on Disability and Development to be held from November 23th to December 19th 2009 at the VU University. This course, a 4-week elective module, which is part of an academic Master degree programme, is open to external participants also. Students will learn in a highly participatory environment built around a problem-based learning approach. Lecturers have extensive international experience in disability and related fields. An overview of the course content can be found on the VU website: http://studiegids.vu.nl/ (type ‘disability’ as search term). The course was offered for the first time in 2008 and was very positively evaluated by the first batch of students.

The following topics will be covered in Module I:
Disability models and stereotypes, culture and disability, ICF conceptual framework, experience of having a disability, frequencies and distribution of disability, determinants of disability, including stigma and discrimination, poverty, gender and HIV/AIDS, rights of persons with disabilities, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, measurement of disability, disability-relevant research methods, survey methods, examples of disability research and an introduction to community-based rehabilitation.

In 2010, a second elective module will be offered on the subject of Disability & Development. This module will have the same duration as Module I

Module II will cover the following additional topics:
Project planning and management, monitoring and evaluation of community-based rehabilitation (CBR) programmes, management information systems, CBR as a preferred strategy for rehabilitation, organisational and institutional development, Disabled People’s Organisations, educational and economic empowerment of disabled people, the role of specific rehabilitation services, and sports and disability.

Interested candidates should apply well in advance and contact Huib Cornielje as soon as possible.

TARGET GROUP: rehabilitation professionals and professionals with an interest in disability and development.

REQUIREMENTS: good comprehension of the English language; bachelor degree or equivalent (in terms of experience and thinking capacity)

COURSE FEES: Euro 1,000 (excluding board & lodging); students who wish to gain official study credits (ETCS) will have to register as external students at the VU University. This will cost an additional €1,200 for 4 weeks, approximately.

“It’s in the telling of our stories that we discover how much of our experiences and learning we have in common with others. Stories make our connection with others and with the world real. They weave together our individual experiences to reveal a picture of a community, a group and a country.”

Introduction

The Secretariat of the African Decade for Persons with Disabilities (SADPD) in partnership with APC-Africa-Women and Women’sNet, invite you to submit an application to participate in a digital storytelling workshop. We are inviting people living and working in Africa who would like to empower others and affect change by documenting their journey and telling their story. Applicants must be:

(1) parents/carers of children with disabilities and youth
(2) young people with disabilities
(3) people working in organizations to promote the rights of children and youth with disabilities e.g. Advocates, students, CBR workers, teachers, journalists, information activists, content developers, programme officer/managers,

Participants will develop short videos reflecting the experiences of parents and youth with disabilities in particular with regards to challenges and successes in accessing inclusive education, health, employment and acceptance in their communities and country. Participants will also examine the power dimensions of story-telling and how we retain the authenticity of our own voice, as well as the voices of the people whose stories we document, preserve or disseminate.

Parents, youth and individuals working in the field have many stories to tell, but never have the time, knowledge, equipment and space to reflect, understand and tell their own stories, share their responses, understandings and experiences.

There is a large amount of information on the internet but very little that reflects the lived realities of those affected and people working in the field of disability in Africa.

The workshop aims to:
• document real-life stories of a cross-section of parents and youth with disabilities as well as those working in the field
• empower people to tell their own stories, while at the same time create a powerful advocacy tool that can be used in their country and beyond.
• develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills,
• enable parents and youth with disabilities to share and network amongst each other.

More about the workshop

In the workshop we will explore people’s own stories and learn how to develop a story line, use photo’s, video clips, and drawings to tell your story in an effective way.

There is space for twelve applicants who will participate in a five day digital storytelling workshop, 8 -12 June 2009.

In the month before the workshop delegates will need to join an online study group, collect content for their story (pictures etc) and begin to learn some of the software.

At the workshop participants will learn to use computer software and other equipment necessary for making a short (3-5 minutes) multimedia digital story.

The digital storytelling workshop is hands-on and computer intensive, requiring commitment and willingness to develop a short, personal story; learn new software and edit a short digital video of five minutes in length.

Digital storytelling is not like writing a formal document; it’s more like creative, autobiographical writing. To see an example, check out the website

In order to be eligible to participate, you must be able to attend all five days of the workshop, and be able to travel to South Africa to arrive by 7 June, departing 13 June 2009. Travel and accommodation will be sponsored by the SADPD. You must be willing to allow your story, or part of it, to be used in advocacy by SADPD and APC WNSP’s Take Back the Tech campaign. The workshop will be conducted in ENGLISH so other language speakers must have a good proficiency in English. Sign language and French / Portugese interpretation will be provided if necessary (Please motivate for this in application form).

This workshop is a chance to learn new skills and tell your story in a creative and visual format. It’s a lot of work . . . AND a lot of fun.

We are open to discussing a formula that respects your privacy and confidentiality should you be uncomfortable with the widespread sharing and dissemination of some parts of your story. Who Should Apply?
• We are looking for stories told by parent, youth and individuals working in the field of Disability.
• Applicants must be living and working in Africa (preference will be given to women)
• Applicants must preferably be based in an organisation, institution or network, but individuals will also be considered.
• Youth should between the ages of 18 – 35
• The training is in English. Participants must speak and understand English but are welcome to produce their story in any language they choose. If however you require translation into French and Portuguese please motivate in your application.
• The story you tell has to be about you and your experiences. It can be about situations or events but it must be a personal story told in the first person
• The workshop requires a basic level of computer literacy.
• Applicants must be willing to avail themselves for future advocacy work or training in digital stories in their country.

About the Secretariat of the African Decade for Persons with Disabilities
The African Decade of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by the African Union for the period 1999 – 2009. The main goals of the African Decade are to raise awareness about the situation of the estimated 60-80 million persons with disabilities in the region and to identify solutions tailored to the African Experience that enhance participation, equality and empowerment of Africans with Disabilities. The overall aims and priorities of the Decade are stipulated in an AU- Continental Plan of Action. A Secretariat was established to facilitate the realization of these objectives.
The Secretariat is an international Non Governmental Organisation, established in 2004 by all the major Regional Disabled People’s Organisations to give a new dynamism to the implementation of the Continental Plan of Action. It is hosted, at the request of African Union by South Africa in Cape-Town where its headquarters are located. The mission of the Secretariat of the African Decade is to empower Governments, DPO´s, Decade steering committee’s (DSC) and development organizations to work in partnership to include disability and persons with disabilities into policies and programs in all sectors of society. The strategy of action of the Secretariat is to
• Build the capacities of DPOs, persons with disabilities who are most vulnerable and the Decade Steering Committees to enable them to advocate and lobby their respective government so that they integrate disability into all their development processes.

About APC-Africa-Women

APC-Africa-women is the African regional network of the Association for Progressive Communications Women’s Networking Support Programme (APC WNSP). APC WNSP is a global network of women who support women networking for social change and women’s empowerment, through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). We promote gender equality in the design, development, implementation, access to and use of ICTs and in the policy decisions and frameworks that regulate them. APC-Africa-Women hosts Women’s Electronic Network Training (WENT) workshops every two years. WENT workshops aim to build the skills and capacities of women and their organisations to utilise ICTs in women’s empowerment, social development work and policy advocacy. In 2003 participants at WENT Africa developed skills in the repackaging of information through the convergence of old and new technologies using radio and in building websites using a Content Management System. Weaving through the training were sessions on gender and ICT policy issues. Committed to improving the quality of personal and professional lives of deaf and hard of hearing individuals, the Gallaudet Leadership Institute and Professional Studies (GLIPS), a unit of the College of Professional Studies and Outreach at Gallaudet University, in collaboration with the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) ensures and assures the following program experiences and outcomes for participants:

1. Thorough understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)

2. Preparation for working at national level leadership positions

3. Skills to organize grassroots level deaf people into dynamic and productive groups

4. Hands-on training in strategic planning and goal setting

The Department of Linguistics at the School of Oriental and African
Studies is proud to announce the second 3L International Summer
School on Language Documentation and Description to be held in London beginning on 22nd June and ending on 3rd July 2009. International Labour Organization (ILO) Training course for professionals from developing and transition countries

Dates: 20 – 29 April 2009 – Language: English – Venue: Turin, Italy

The ILO International Training Centre is offering a course on “Labour market inclusion of people with disabilities” (course A901286). The course language will be English and registration is open to staff involved in policy making, planning, implementation, research of Ministries, Social Partners and other institutions working on disability and social inclusion. Please note that this course is especially designed for participants from developing and transition countries.

The course programme offers the possibility to learn more about legislation and mechanisms for labour market inclusion of people with disabilities in developing and transition countries, provides the opportunity to get to know different international experience and good practice.

The conditions of participation are the following:

COSTS
The price of the course is EURO 2,950. This amount includes the cost of training and subsistence (full board and lodging at the Turin Centre).

FELLOWSHIPS
The ILO International Training Centre offers a number of partial fellowships to co-finance the costs of the course. If you wish to apply for a fellowship, please contact us as soon as possible. The partial fellowships are for EURO 1,200, the difference is EURO 1,750.

AIR TRAVEL
Not included is the cost of international air travel from the country of origin to Turin, which has to be covered by the participants.

In order to register and to apply for a partial fellowship, candidates should send us:
1. A completed nomination form (Word format, 67 Kb);
2. A “letter of commitment” by the participant’s organization (or a donor organization) stating that it will cover:

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

The Deaf Empowerment Foundation is offering scholarships for students in the 2009/2010 academic year for study in the newly launched 4-year BA (Hons) Applied Sign Language Studies.

This course is a joint international initiative. It was developed at the International Centre for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies in the UK and will be taught at the Indira Gandhi National Open University in New Delhi, India. The beginning of the programme in 2009 is subject to validation.

The 2009/2010 scholarships cover tuition fees for one year full-time study in the Foundation Entry programme, which is a preparatory “Year Zero” of study. The Foundation Entry course focuses on English literacy and other academic skills, including:

English for deaf learners in HE
English reading skills for deaf learners
Text composition skills for deaf learners
Study skills and Personal Development Planning
Information Technology and Numeracy in HE

International Leadership Forum Announcement – Call for Applications

The UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the fifth annual International Leadership Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum, to be held August 1 – 9, 2009 in Storrs, Connecticut, USA. Applications must be received by February 27, 2009.

The Forum seeks to empower young leaders by involving them in finding solutions to emerging human rights problems, and nurturing individuals to be effective leaders in the field of human rights.

To this end, the Forum will:

• Introduce participants to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
• Build a network of solidarity among human rights leaders
• Expand the knowledge relevant to human rights practice
• Provide tools and a platform for open debates
• Provide programmes, activities and processes necessary for human rights leadership
• Promote the sharing of experiences and understanding
• Showcase speakers on such topics as: health and human rights, education, the environment, the plight of child soldiers, the use of media, fundraising, conflict resolution and transformation; litigation and advocacy

The UNESCO Chair will provide all conference participants with dormitory housing, meals, ground transportation in Connecticut, resource materials and a certificate of participation.

Young people between the ages of 18-30, with community service experience, and with demonstrated ability to work on solutions to human rights problems, should apply. Relevant issues include, but are not limited to, human trafficking, the plight of children, refugees, hunger, HIV/AIDs, gender discrimination, racism, classism, the environment and peace education.

Conference will be held in English only. Fluency in English is required. Applicants will be selected based on the strength of their application essay, demonstrated commitment to human rights (practical/hands-on experience), potential impact on the individual and their potential contribution to the Forum, regional and gender representation.

International Fellowships Program (IFP), West Africa. 2010/11 Academic year

The International Fellowships Program (IFP) is a program supported by the Ford Foundation, and coordinated in West Africa by the Association of African Universities (AAU) in collaboration with Pathfinder International in *Nigeria and West African Research Center (WARC ) in Senegal. IFP provides fellowships for advanced study to exceptional individuals who will use their education to further development in their own countries and greater social and economic justice worldwide. IFP fellowships will be awarded to applicants from diverse backgrounds, including social groups and communities that lack systematic access to higher education.

[Note to We Can Do readers: The official announcement from the Ford Foundation does not specifically reference students with disabilities. But you could point out to them that people with disabilities are frequently denied opportunities to access education at all levels, from primary school through higher education. The UK Department of International Development indicates that, out of 77 million children not enrolled in primary school, one-third have disabilities.]

The 2009 Advanced Course on the International Protection of Human
Rights will be organized between 17 and 28 August, in Turku/Åbo,
Finland. Application deadline: 20 April 2009.

The course aims at providing a profound insight into, and analysis of, the system of international human rights protection in the light of contemporary problems and relevant case law. Students should have a law degree (or equivalent) and a good basic knowledge of human rights law. About 30 applicants will be accepted. The course fee, which includes lodging at the University’s guesthouse (dormitory standard), course materials, and two receptions, is EUR 1,300. The fee is EUR 1,000 for those who make their own housing arrangements.

Master’s Degree in International Human Rights Law, Abo Akademi University, Finland

The Institute for Human Rights and the Department of Law at Abo
Akademi University offer a two-year Master’s Degree Programme in
International Human Rights Law
. The application deadline for the 2009-2011 program is: 27 February 2009 at 4 pm (CET+1). Both the application and all supporting documents must be submitted by this time. Applications arriving past the deadline will not be considered.

The 120-credit program is taught in English. The a official website for the master’s program does not clarify whether offers content specific to the human rights issues of disabled people in developing countries. However, their provided information on the structure of the program indicates that students must take 15 to 35 credits in optional courses in order to achieve the total 120 credits required for the program. Students interested in disability rights in developing countries may wish to communicate directly with the program at hrm-coordinator@abo.fi to explore options for incorporating an emphasis on disability rights into the standard program.

Admission to the program is very competitive: only 15 students will be accepted to the 2009-2011 program. This means that not all students who meet the eligibility requirements will be able to enter the program. Students must have a law degree or other bachelor’s degree with at least 45 credits in law or relevant subjects.

Master’s Degree in International Development and Disability

Gallaudet University offers a Master’s Degree in International Development which prepares students to collaborate with a variety of groups which wish to include people with disabilities in their organizations, development projects and programs. The degree draws on theories and material from disability studies, international relations, public policy, research and evaluation. Students study significant topics in international relations that affect the economic and social development of countries worldwide, including:

· the theories and strategies of international development;
· the political, social and developmental issues surrounding disability that result in the continued oppression and marginalization of disabled people around the globe;
· the links between disability and development in the areas of human rights, poverty, the environment, health, gender, children, and conflict and emergency situations such as natural disasters;
· the inclusion of disability issues in mainstream development practice;
· participatory approaches in planning, implementation, monitoring, reviewing and evaluation, National and International policy framework, and;
· practice and theory of living and studying in cultures different from one’s own.

Applications for Gallaudet University’s Master’s Degree in International Development are due April 1st, 2009 in order to start in August 2009.

Position needed: – Lecturer in Linguistics (with expertise in sign language linguistics and/or deaf studies)

Addis Ababa University’s Department of Linguistics has launched the Bachelors of Arts degree in Ethiopian Sign Language and Deaf Culture this academic year (2008-2009). It is the first BA degree course in Sign Language provided in the African continent.

The main objectives of the BA program are to encourage and train:
• sign language teachers in teaching sign language courses at secondary and tertiary levels
• sign linguists in conducting research on Ethiopian Sign Language in order to promote the use, status and function of Ethiopian Sign Language.
• sign language interpreters in the interpreting profession

The program is to:
• Promote collaborative research on Ethiopian Sign Language in conjunction with other institutions of higher learning at local, regional and international levels.
• Provide advisory services to organizations, schools, institutions that work to promote Ethiopian Sign Language and Deaf culture, organize short-term trainings for people involved in Sign language and Deaf Education, compilation of Sign language dictionary etc.

It is a three year regular university program which gives modules focusing on sign language, linguistics, Deaf Culture. Some of the modules the Lecturer is expected to be familiar with are:
• Sign language and Society
• Sign language literature and performance
• Trends in Deaf Education
• The sociology of signing family
• Sign language interpretation and translation
• Deafness in broader perspectives,
• Communication Support for Deaf People (i.e. note-taking, interpreting etc)

We may require the expatriate lecturers (if given sufficient skills needed) to assist us in doing a feasibility study into setting up the African Centre for Deaf Studies and Sign Language Studies at our university.

Contractual time:
The Department of Linguistics and Philology seeks to employ two full-time Lecturer positions. The minimum contractual time is two years as of March 2009 with the possibility of extending the contract.

Requirement:
• Good sign language skills, preferably in American Sign Language
• Postgraduate diploma in Sign linguistics, Deaf Studies, or related field or qualification;
• Knowledge of Deaf history and culture;
• Extensive experience in working with the Deaf community;

The ideal candidates for the position should be a self-starter, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple assignments and operate in team work and an intense environment.

INTERIGHTS’ Equality Programme is pleased to invite applications for an internship as part of the development and implementation of its work to advance the rights of people with disabilities in Africa. The three-month internship will begin in April 2009 and will be based in London.

This full-time placement will provide an opportunity for a lawyer with knowledge of disability issues and litigation experience in Africa to develop their legal skills whilst assisting our programme with:

· Legal research on international and comparative human rights law and practice with respect to the protection of the rights of people with disabilities;

· Preparation of materials for legal training on the application and development of equality standards;

· Strategic programme development.

Where possible, the intern may attend meetings with human rights practitioners, human rights lectures, or visit other international or national human rights organisations based in London.

INTERIGHTS will arrange and pay for travel. The intern will receive a monthly salary of £1,200. Accommodation is not provided but INTERIGHTS can advise on finding a suitable place to stay.

I have the pleasure of announcing that the ILO International Training Centre is offering a course on “Labour market inclusion of people with disabilities” (course A901286). The course language will be English and registration is open to staff involved in policy making, planning, implementation, research of Ministries, Social Partners and other institutions working on disability and social inclusion. Please note that this course is especially designed for participants from developing and transition countries.

The course programme offers the possibility to learn more about legislation, mechanisms and mechanisms for labour market inclusion of people with disabilities in developing and transition countries and provides the opportunity to get to know different international experience and good practice.

The conditions of participation are the following:

COSTS
The price of the course is EURO 2,950. This amount includes the cost of training and subsistence (full board and lodging at the Turin Centre).

FELLOWSHIPS
The ILO International Training Centre offers a number of partial fellowships to co-finance the costs of the course. If you wish to apply for a fellowship, please contact us as soon as possible. The partial fellowships are for EURO 1,200, the difference is EURO 1,750.

AIR TRAVEL
Not included is the cost of international air travel from the country of origin to Turin, which has to be covered by the participants.

Human Rights Advocates Program, Columbia University: Training for human rights advocates

Disability rights advocates ready for a one-semester graduate-level training program may wish to apply on that basis. Dear friends and colleagues:

The application for the 2009 session of the annual Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) at Columbia University is now available (deadline December 19, 2008). Columbia University asks that people disseminate this information to human rights activists based in the Global South as well as grassroots activists in the United States.

HRAP is designed to prepare proven human rights leaders from the Global South and marginalized communities in the U.S. to participate in national and international policy debates on globalization by building their skills, knowledge, and contacts. The Program features a four-month residency at Columbia University in New York City with a structured curriculum of advocacy, networking, skills-building, and academic coursework.

Since 2004, HRAP has concentrated its support on individuals and organizations that address issues broadly related to globalization.

The four-month intensive capacity building program based at Columbia University in New York focuses on the following key issue areas:

* Environmental injustice
* Labor rights violations
* Ramifications of resource extraction
* Public health crises
* Unsustainable development
* Intolerance, xenophobia, and social exclusion related to globalization

Special attention is given to the above issues and their intersection with gender, race, ethnicity, sexual identity, and/or other sources of marginalization.

Participants are selected on the basis of their previous work experience on human rights and globalization, commitment to the human rights field, and demonstrated ability to complete graduate-level studies. Advocates must originate from and reside in either the Global South or the United States. Fluency in English is required. Advocate s must secure institutional endorsement from their organizations for their participation in the Program and must commit to returning to that organization upon completion of the Program. If accepted, they must also commit to participating in the program fully.

This extremely competitive Program will admit approximately six participants. We make every effort to provide full fellowships to cover program costs as well as travel and living expenses for selected Advocates each year.

Attached please find the 2009 application form. Completed applications are due by December 19, 2008. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The 2009 HRAP will take place from the middle of August to the middle of December 2009.

The East-West Center is pleased to announce new fellowships for the Asia Pacific Leadership Program for 2009-10. Entering its eight year, the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific region. The APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. Based at the East-West Center in Honolulu , Hawaii , the program has created a network of dynamic leaders in 48 countries who are helping to build a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community. All participants receive an APLP Entrance Fellowship valued at approximately $15,000.

Participants
The Asia Pacific Leadership Program seeks outstanding individuals with proven leadership experience or high leadership potential from across the Asia Pacific region, North America and beyond. All participants have at least a Bachelors degree with the majority having graduate degrees as well. At least 20 countries are represented in each cohort. APLP Fellows come together from all walks of life, including areas as diverse as government, business, NGOs, health sciences, media, monastic orders, and education.

APLP participants will gain broad regional perspectives, become knowledgeable about the critical challenges facing the Asia Pacific region, and be trained to exercise leadership and promote cooperation. The APLP empowers leaders with the knowledge, skills, experiences, and supportive community needed to successfully navigate personal and regional change in the 21st century.

The International Development Fellows Program is designed to give those interested in a career in international relief and development, the opportunity to increase their overseas experience, gain project management experience and to be exposed to the work of Catholic Relief Services. A majority of the program participants go on to full-time employment

Fellows work for one year in CRS offices around the world in the sectors of agriculture, education, health, HIV and AIDS, microfinance and peace building. During the course of the year, Fellows are exposed to various aspects of project management including proposal writing, budgeting, working with donors, working with counterparts, and monitoring and evaluation.

Additional Qualifications:

We are looking for candidates with:

-international experience
-a relevant masters degree (international affairs, community development, agriculture, public health, international education, etc.)
-an interest in work for a faith based organization
-professional proficiency in Spanish, French, Arabic and Portuguese
-strong cross cultural skills.

Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes

CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTES

Sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program will offer 525 scholarships for intensive summer language institutes overseas in eleven critical need foreign languages for summer 2009. The CLS Program was launched in 2006 to offer intensive overseas study in the critical need foreign languages of Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Turkish and Urdu. In 2007, Chinese, Korean, Persian, and Russian institutes were added along with increased student capacity in the inaugural language institutes. In 2009, Azerbaijani will be offered at the intermediate and advanced levels.

The CLS Program provides fully-funded seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences held overseas at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels (beginning not offered for Azerbaijani, Chinese, Persian or
Russian) for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students.

2009 program details will be updated by early fall, and 2008 CLS Institute locations and information may be found under Program Details.

The CLS Program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to
apply. Former CLS participants have applied with various academic backgrounds including business, engineering, law, science, medicine, social sciences and humanities. The CLS Program does not have any government service requirement upon completion, however, it is expected
that participants will continue to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their future academic and professional careers.

The deadline for submitting your on-line application is Friday, November 14, 2008.
Your letters of reference and transcript(s) need to be postmarked by Friday, November 14, 2008.

Eligibility:

  • All applicants must be U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate or graduate level.*
  • Current undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of general college course-work by program start date (one year is defined as two semesters or three quarters).
  • Please see program details for more information on language pre-requisites for individual institutes.
  • Students in all disciplines including business, engineering, science, the social sciences and humanities are encouraged to apply.
  • The U.S. Department of State and CAORC welcome all eligible applications and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or handicap condition.

*Only current graduate students or graduating seniors are eligible to apply to the summer 2009 Persian institute.

Grant benefits: All program costs are covered for participants. This includes travel between the student’s US home city and program location, pre-departure orientation costs, applicable visa fees, room, board, group-based intensive language instruction, program-sponsored travel within country, and all entrance fees for program activities.

Note: U.S. passport fees will not be paid by the scholarship. Selected applicants must have a U.S. passport valid through 2010 with at least two blank visa pages by early March 2009. Please plan in advance to avoid visa delays.

Training Workshop on AIDS and Disability, 19-20 November 2008, Soesterberg, The Netherlands

The number of disabled people worldwide is considerable – the figure of 650 million is often quoted. People with a disability and their families also account for 20% of the world’s poorest people. But so far most HIV-AIDS programmes are not accessible to people with disabilities.
International attention to the rights of people with disabilities is increasing especially since May 2008, when the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities has come into effect. However governments and policy makers have generally yet to include disability issues in their AIDS strategic plans. Even within specific disability programmes it is not yet common to ensure that clients of such programmes do have access to appropriate information and services that are related to HIV-AIDS and reproductive health. Leaving disabled people out of HIV-AIDS prevention and care is shortsighted. Given the rapid growth of the epidemic and the size of the global disabled population (an estimated 10% of the world‘s citizens); the AIDS crisis cannot be addressed successfully unless individuals with disability are routinely included in all HIV-AIDS prevention, treatment and outreach efforts!

Local Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) teams, professionals, people with disabilities and their families share the same fears, misconceptions and risks as the rest of the general public with regard to the virus. They urgently need to receive accessible and appropriate information on HIV-AIDS. The launch of the new United Nations CBR Guidelines December 2008 in Bangkok will mean that information on HIV-AIDS will become more easily available for CBR teams as these guidelines pay specific attention to this subject. The goal of the section focusing on HIV-AIDS is to ensure ‘access for all’ to HIV-AIDS information, services and programmes. This goal involves three key areas: increasing individual knowledge, reducing stigma and discrimination and mitigating the impact HIV-AIDS has on families and communities.

During this 2-day workshop outstanding researchers and practitioners will ensure that participants will become sensitized towards the need for inclusion of disabled people within their mainstream HIV-AIDS programmes. They will also discuss strategies, tools and experiences in HIV/AIDS programmes that include disabled people and in CBR and disability programmes which integrate HIV-AIDS with their other activities.

development cooperation
• policy makers & planners as well as project staff of mainstream HIV¬AIDS organisations
• AIDS activists
• interested academic staff from various university faculties

Overall goal
Mainstream development and HIV¬AIDS organisations understand the importance of inclusion of disabled people in their HIV-AIDS programmes.

Participants have an increased awareness about the vulnerability of persons with disabilities to the risk and impact of HIV and AIDS;
Participants have tools and arguments for how to ensure inclusion of disability in HIV-AIDS policies, strategies and programs; Participants are able to advocate within their own organizations for equal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for persons with disabilities.

Lecturing staff Dr. Nora Groce (USA) is a medical anthropologist, interested in the area of global health and international development with particular emphasis on cross-cultural systems of health care and health as human rights issues. Her research interests include issues of disability in international health and development, violence as a global public health problem and equity in access to health care in ethnic and minority communities. Current Research Projects of Nora Groce are:
• Disability and HIV/AIDS knowledge among Disabled Populations (and the Yale University/World Bank Global Survey on HIV/AIDS and Disability);
• World Bank Health Systems Assessment Project;
• Violence against Disabled Children; and
• HIV/AIDS Education in Indigenous Communities: Rites of Passage

George O. Obuya (Kenya) is project co-coordinator of the Deaf Social Counselling & HIV/AIDS Education Program. He is representing the Dar-es Salaam (Tanzania) based and recently formed African Deaf Union in the African Decade for Persons with Disability HIV/AIDS Steering Committee, as well as a senior board member of the Kenya National Association of the Deaf (KNAD).

Jessica de Ruijter is the advocacy officer at VSO Netherlands. She has much experience in the area of HIV prevention and started advocacy on HIV and disability since January 2008. She is also the co-chair of the DCDD working group HIV and Disability.

Dr Peter Rule is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Adult Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. He recently completed a three-country study for the World Bank on HIV & AIDS and Disability. He has experience of working with NGOs in KwaZulu-Natal in the fields of adult literacy, disability, gender, HIV/AIDS and early childhood development.

Geert Vanneste is a health and rehabilitation consultant who worked for Christoffel BlindenMission (CBM) in Rwanda (1987-1994) and Tanzania (1994-2007). His main expertise is in the area of CBR but increasingly he became involved in Health and Hospital Management and HIV-AIDS issues. Currently he is Independent Consultant and living in Belgium.

The workshop will be conducted under the leadership of Roelie Wolting and Huib Cornielje and supported by the HIV-AIDS working group of the Dutch Coalition on Disability and Development.

Masters of Advanced Studies in Children’s Rights

“Applicants are needed for the 2009-2010 Master of Advanced Studies in Children’s Rights (MCR), an interdisciplinary part-time postgraduate programme in children’s rights, which is jointly organized by the Institut Universitaire Kurt Bösch (IUKB) in Sion and the University of Fribourg, both in Switzerland.

Program begins 16 February 2009 and the deadline for applications is 15 September 2008. Contact Sarah Bruchez through the website at http://www.iukb.ch/index.php?id=63

It is not clear from their web site to what extent the program will include content on the unique needs and situation of children with disabilities, or the unique needs of children in developing countries. Nor is it clear how well the program will accommodate the needs of participants with disabilities. 11th Duskin Leadership Training in Japan

The Duskin Leadership Training in Japan program is intended for persons with disabilities in Asian and Pacific regions who have potential to be community leaders. To help achieve their goals, this program provides an opportunity for them to learn about welfare measures, policies and services for persons with disabilities in Japan and thus improve their knowledge and skills. It is sponsored by the Duskin AINOWA Foundation as one of the projects commemorating the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons (1993-2002)

A maximum of 10 (in principle, one trainee from one country/region) will be selected. Training period duration will be 10 months.

Here are applicant Qualifications:

(1) The applicant should be a person with disability who wishes to contribute to the community as a future leader.

(2) In principle, the applicant should be between 18 and 25 years of age.

(3) Specific educational background or work experiences are not required.

(4) The applicant should undergo ten-month continuous training in Japan and should be able to adapt himself/herself to the Japanese way of life.

(5) The applicant should have sufficient communication skills to participate in the Japanese language course given in Japanese or Japanese sign language or English or American sign language.

(6) The applicant should be able to carry on the activities of daily life without assistance.

(7) The applicant should have his/her own training plan.

(8) The applicant should have a surety, who is a parent, brother or sister who is of age, or someone who is equivalent to the kin.

(9) The applicant should be ready to accept all risks in case of unforeseen incidents including accidents.

Research Positions for African Policy on Disability & Development (A-PODD)

Two Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships for 3 years
Four Research Assistantships for 1 Year,
one in each of Sierra Leone, Uganda, Ethiopia & Malawi

We seek people with experience in researching disability issues for the above positions which will be based at the Centre for Rehabilitation Studies, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, with associated appointments at the Centre for Global Health, Trinity College Dublin and The Secretariat of the African Decade for Persons with Disability.

Post-Doctoral Fellows should have completed, or be completing, a PhD in disability or a closely related area, and be willing to travel between Ireland, South Africa, and two of the project countries.

Research Assistants should have a degree in a relevant social or health science, or evidence of operating at an equivalent level. Research Assistants may be considered for fully-funded registration for a Masters in Research at Stellenbsoch University. Limited travel to South Africa will be required with Research Assistants based in one of the four project countries.
We are particularly keen to encourage applications from persons with disability.

Project Description
A-PODD is a three year project funded by the (Irish) Health Research Board and Irish Aid. A-PODD is led by Prof Mac MacLachlan, Centre for Global Health and School of Psychology, Trinity College Dublin; Ms Gubela Mji, Centre for Rehabilitation Studies, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and Mr A.K. Dube, The Secretariat of the African Decade for Persons with Disability.

This research investigates how disability can be put on the agenda of national and international development initiatives. It focuses on how research evidence can be utilised to inform the policy environment (such as PRSPs and SWAps), development institutions (such as the IMF, World Bank and WHO), as well as less formal local, community and grass-roots decision making and inclusion efforts.

A-PODD will undertake four country case studies: in Sierra Leone, a country emerging from conflict that resulted in many people being disabled; Malawi and Uganda, the only two African countries that have Ministries for people with disabilities; and Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa, with significant geographical barriers and a highly dispersed population, presenting significant challenges to the inclusion of people with disability.

Our comparative analysis will inform disability policy and implementation within the region. Barriers and facilitators will be identified along implementation pathways, and so too will local means and mechanisms of addressing these. Country reports will be discussed at a concluding workshop to which governments, civil society, donors, researchers and others will be invited. A code of best practice will be drawn up for Moving Evidence to Action on African Disability Policy.

NEWS: Sign Language Training Program Launches in Guyana

The Guyana Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Guyana Community Based Rehabilitation Programme (GCBRP), has initiated a sign language training program targeted at improving the quality of education for deaf children, the Kaieteur News has reported. The program will provide sign language training to teachers so they can better accommodate the communicate need of deaf children in their classrooms. It is being offered through the St. Stanislaus College in Brickdam.

Australian Leadership Awards Scholarship for Masters or Doctorate

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Scholarships are a component of the Australian Leadership Awards, a regional program under the Australian Scholarships initiative. Australian Leadership Awards aim to develop leadership, build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific.

They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region. The ALA program comprises of Scholarships and Fellowships.

ALA Scholarships are academically elite awards offered to high achievers from the Asia-Pacific region each year to undertake postgraduate study (Masters or Doctorate) and a Leadership Development Program in Australia.

Selection for ALA Scholarships is highly competitive, based on leadership qualities and on academic excellence.

ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region. In this regard, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies.

In future years, ALA scholars will belong to a unique group – the Australian Scholarships Alumni Network (ASAN) – that will maintain strong and enduring links to Australia. Managed by AusAID as part of Australia’s overseas aid program, ALA Scholarships are open only to citizens of countries in the Asia-Pacific region with which Australia has a significant aid program.

Objectives of ALA Scholarships
ALA Scholarships aim to:

  • develop a cadre of leaders advancing regional reform, development and governance
  • increase exchange of knowledge and information within the region
  • build common purpose and understanding between Australia and the region
  • build capacity to address priority regional issues
  • build effective networks between Australia and the region
  • demonstrate the benefits of Australian education through the provision of high quality education.

Fields of study
Awards are open to all fields of study, however, study programs that relate to the priority themes of international trade, pandemics, security and climate change (including clean energy) are encouraged. Scholarships are not available for military training, or training in areas related to nuclear technology and flying aircraft.

Levels of study
An ALA Scholarship enables candidates to undertake studies leading to a Masters or Doctorate degree in Australia. It does not include Graduate Diplomas, with the exception of those Masters courses that require the completion of a Graduate Diploma as part of the Masters degree.

Who should apply
Outstanding applicants with:

  • a very high level of academic achievement at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
  • a high level of English language proficiency
  • demonstrated leadership potential and good prospects to influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes in their home country and in the Asia-Pacific region
  • a commitment to participate ASAN on their return home.

Scholarship benefits
An ALA Scholarship has a total value of up to A$110,000 for Masters degrees and A$220,000 for Doctoral programs, not including provisions for the leadership development program.

  • contribution to living expenses
  • Introductory Academic program (IAP)
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only).

Eligibility
To be eligible for an Australian Leadership Award (ALA) Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the eligibility requirements outlined below.

Applicants must be a citizen of one of the participating countries listed below.
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kiribati, Laos, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Nauru, Nepal, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu, Viet Nam, Wallis & Futuna.

Applicants must not have Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence status, nor be in the process of applying.

No. 1/08

The Department of Linguistics, Addis Ababa University, organized and conducted a one day consultative workshop on a Draft syllabus of a BA program in Ethiopian Sign Language (ESL) and Deaf Culture on March 14, 2008 in Addis Ababa. The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate the draft syllabus with the presence of stakeholders who are working in the area of sign language and Deaf Education. The participants are mainly teachers of Deaf schools, Deaf Students, representatives from Deaf Association, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, NGOs, various relevant government offices and the university officials.

Ethiopia’s first BA program in ESL and Deaf Culture has the following main objectives:

  • Train Deaf teachers and Deaf sign linguists,
  • Promoting the growth and enrichment of the ESL and,
  • Promote collaborative research on ESL.

It was told by the participants that such initiatives taken by the university is encouraging to minimize the shortage of teachers of deaf students all over the country. This three years BA program is hopefully to be launched in October 2008. Besides, the department has a future plan to set up a Regional Sign Language Center. Therefore, the department invites professionals to support our effort in the improvement of Ethiopian Deaf Education and for the development of Ethiopian Sign Language.

Currently, the department gives a non-credit, free of charge, awareness raising course on ESL and Deaf Culture for the University community. There are about 250 students attending this course in six (6) classes and will be certified on June 2008.

Global Health and Mental Health in Deaf Communities

Professional Studies (PST)

This 3-credit course is designed as an online course and introduces the student in the allied health and mental health professions to the global health issues and needs of the deaf and hard of hearing community. The course covers the salient issues in health and mental health care of a population that has been historically overlooked by health care providers due to attitude and communication barriers. The intent of the course is to develop knowledge, values and skills which will give students a basic understanding of the health and mental health issues of deaf people, the health disparities to this population, and the need to become advocates for quality care. This course is offered for both Graduate (SWK 795) and Professional Studies (PST 876) credit.

Tuition
If you register for this course as PST 876 (professional studies), then the cost is $690 for US citizens and $1,380 for international students.

If you register for this course for full academic credit as SWK 795, then tuition is $1931 for US citizens and $3861 for international students.

University Program in International Organizations to Begin September 2008

The University of Zurich in collaboration with the University of Geneva offers new Programmes for Advanced Studies in International Organisations starting in September 2008. A brief summary can be found below, detailed information is available on our website:

The MAS International Organisations programme is divided into three parts:

In the general part, students will familiarise themselves with the governing principles of public international law, international politics and economics and will deepen their knowledge in the law of international organisations. Different structures such as the international financial architecture, special mechanisms, and current problems of the most important international organisations will be discussed. This part of the programme will lay the foundations for the specialisation courses and allow the participants to engage in a knowledgeable dialogue with leading experts in the field.

In a second part, students may specialise in a specific area according to their own interests and needs.

The third part consists of individual research and the writing of a diploma thesis.

Specialisation courses with Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS)

In order to meet the needs of practitioners already working in International Organisations or who are going to do so in the near future, we offer all submodules of the specialisation part as certificate courses. Each submodule consists of different lectures and will be completed by an exam.

Successful candidates will receive a “Certificate of Advanced Studies” (CAS) in the respective field.

All courses are taught in English and are taking place in Zurich and Geneva.

Human Rights Education WORKSHOP

The Harvard Project on Disability (HPOD) is pleased to announce the convening of a workshop to mark the release of We Have Human Rights, an action and advocacy handbook specifically designed by and for self-advocates with intellectual disabilities and for use by all who are interested in advancing the human rights of persons with disabilities.

HPOD will release the Handbook during the second half of June in New York at a human rights education workshop modeled on participatory exercises in the Handbook. HPOD is calling for applications from self advocates from developing countries and applications are especially welcome from self-advocates who represent disabled peoples organizations working on the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities.

Informational RESOURCE: Disability Web Portal Launched in India

A new interactive web portal for people with disabilities in India, called Punarbhava, has launched. This initiative of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and Media Lab Asia is targeted not only at persons with disabilities but also non-government organizations (NGOs), policy makers, caregivers, service providers, people working in the disability sector, and the public at large who wish to learn more about disability and related issues.

Among other things, the portal provides census
information about disabilities in India
and other data; information about various national and international laws affecting disabled people in India; information on documentaries and films or publications about disabilities; assistance in locating vocational training centers in India; information for rehabilitation professionals; resources for people with disabilities who are job hunting in India; information on training programs for professionals who wish to work with people with disabilities; and more.

TRAINING: International Diploma in Mental Health Law, Human Rights

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced the first ever one-year International Diploma in Mental Health Law and Human Rights. The new academic program will launch in October 2008 in Pune, India, and is the result of a collaborative effort between the Indian Law Society Law College and WHO Mental Health Improvements for Nations Development (MIND). Based on WHO materials and tools, the program is meant to enhance student understanding of international human rights standards and mechanisms to protect the rights of people with mental disabilities and provide them with the skills to apply this knowledge in their own national contexts.

This program is particularly relevant in light of the new international disability rights treaty–the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)–that will be entering into force on May 3, 2008.

To be eligible for the new International Diploma in Mental Health Law and Human Rights, students should have a degree from any recognized university in any of the following subjects: law, medicine, psychiatry, nursing, psychology, social work, other social sciences, or other natural sciences.

Alternately, people who use mental health services, and caretakers, are also encouraged to pursue the diploma program so they can become effective advocates for change. These candidates can be eligible with graduate qualification in any discipline from a recognized university.

The application deadline is June 15, 2008 in order to be considered for entering with the first class of students in October 2008.

UPDATE, July 2, 2008: it has been confirmed that another course will be offered in the year 2009. People who have missed the deadline to apply for the 2008 course should monitor the website for the International Diploma in Mental Health Law and Human Rights directly for updates, deadlines, and other details relating to subsequent courses.

Students may apply on line. Tuition for international students will be $7000 in US dollars. Prospective students should follow the link to the website for the diploma program for information on the availability of scholarship options. As of July 2008, their website indicates that limited scholarships are available primarily for people in India.

    The Tusaidiane Disabilities Resources and Charity Organization of Tanzania (TDRCT) would like to improve computer literacy and self-employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Mwanza, Tanzania, and promote their empowerment.

    This organization is run by people who themselves have disabilities. I have known the man who founded this organization for some years. If his organization can quickly raise $5000 from 40 donors within a few days, then GlobalGiving will feature their organization on its website.
