ABOUT MIUSA:
Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is a U.S.-based, non-profit organization whose mission is to empower people with disabilities around the world to achieve their human rights through international exchange and international development.

ABOUT THE WILD PROGRAM:
MIUSA’s Women’s Institute on Leadership and Disability (WILD) will bring together approximately 30 women leaders with disabilities from approximately 30 different countries, to strengthen leadership skills, create new visions and build international networks of support for inclusive international development programming.

During the three-week program, participants will take part in workshops, seminars and discussions, conduct on-site visits, and participate in team-building activities, to explore challenges and exchange strategies for increasing leadership opportunities and participation of women and girls with disabilities in international development programs.

WHO CAN APPLY: ELIGIBILITY
Women with disabilities who are from:

  • South Pacific
  • Middle East
  • Latin America
  • Caribbean
  • Eurasia
  • Asia
  • Africa

Women with disabilities who are:

  • Established leaders and/or professionals
  • Emerging young leaders, ages 21 and above

Women with disabilities who speak or use at least ONE of the following languages:

  • Conversational English (minimum)
  • Spanish
  • Arabic
  • Sign Language; preferably familiar with American Sign Language (ASL)

•    MIUSA uses ASL sign language interpreters who are experienced and skilled at providing interpretation for individuals who use different sign languages.
•    Spoken and sign language interpretation will be provided during formal program activities, workshops, discussions and site visits only.

WHO CAN APPLY: QUALIFICATIONS
Women leaders with disabilities who demonstrate:

  • Personal experience with disability, an understanding of issues, and a commitment to working for the rights of women and girls with disabilities
  • Membership in an organization led by and for people with disabilities, or by and for women, with particular attention to issues of women and girls with disabilities; or civil society organization committed to the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities
  • Commitment to and capacity for increasing leadership opportunities of women with disabilities in the community and/or country
  • Commitment to and capacity for increasing the participation of women and girls with disabilities in international development programs

MIUSA will strive for diversity of geographic region, age, ethnic background, and types of disability in final selection of qualified participants. MIUSA will give priority to qualified women with disabilities who:

  • Are from rural communities
  • Are members of indigenous groups
  • Have not participated in a MIUSA exchange program
  • Have not visited the United States

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The WILD program will include interactive workshops, site visits and practical activities on priority issues for women with disabilities, including:

•    National and International Policies and Legislation, including the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Disability Policy
•    Educational rights and opportunities including specialized and inclusive schools, policy and legal rights, services and accommodations for accessibility
•    Leadership for economic empowerment, including higher education, training models, supported employment, microenterprise, private sector partnerships, career mentorship, skill-building, employment policy, and career development.
•    Health and family issues including parenting, health care, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and violence prevention
•    Using the media
•    Coalition building
•    Organizational development and sustainability, including funding resources and strategies, and fostering partnerships with community organizations and businesses
•    Goals and action plans to promote collaborative relationships with other organizations for the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in international development programs.
•    Inclusive international development, including exchanging strategies for inclusion with representatives from U.S-based international development organizations and/or human rights organizations
•    Cultural and team-building experiences
•    Mentorship and networking

LODGING AND TRANSPORTATION:

•    Simple but comfortable lodging with a local host family will be provided. During one-week of the program, shared lodging will be provided at a simple outdoor retreat center.
•    Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided each day. All supplemental meals, snacks, or personal incidentals (including laundry) will be at the expense of each delegate.
•    Accessible public transportation will be provided.
Note: Please do not expect “luxury” accommodations, meals, or transportation.

PROGRAM COST:
Accepted participants will be responsible for:
1.    $250 USD program fee.  Limited scholarships may be available based on applicant’s demonstrated financial need. Applications for a scholarship will be provided upon acceptance to the WILD program.
2.    Obtaining a current, valid passport and U.S. visa, including all related costs such as travel to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the home country

MIUSA will provide:
1.    Roundtrip airplane tickets for participants to travel from home countries to Eugene, Oregon, USA
2.    Travel health insurance during the WILD program
3.    Food, lodging, program activities and accessible public transportation during the WILD program
4.    Disability-related accommodations, including sign language interpreters, funding for personal assistants, etc.

Disability Rights Fund Releases Second 2011 Request for Proposals:
Addressing Bangladesh, Pacific Island Countries, Ghana, Uganda, Nicaragua and Peru

BOSTON, MA – The Disability Rights Fund (DRF)—a grantmaking collaborative between donors and the global disability community which supports the human rights of persons with disabilities—today announced its second 2011 grants round, “Securing Our Rights.” Grantmaking in this round will be targeted to disabled persons’ organizations (DPOs) in Bangladesh, 14 Pacific Island countries, Ghana, Uganda, Nicaragua and Peru.

The broad objective of the Fund—which was officially launched in March 2008 and is a Project of Tides—is to empower DPOs in the developing world and Eastern Europe/former Soviet Union to participate in ratification, implementation and monitoring of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CPRD).

In the second round of 2011 grantmaking, applicant organizations from 14 Pacific Island countries (Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu), Ghana, and Nicaragua may apply as single organizations or partnerships for 12-month Small Grants. Organizations from Bangladesh, Peru and Uganda may apply by invitation only. Grants will range from USD 5,000 to 20,000 and will support efforts to build CRPD skills and to develop rights-based advocacy and monitoring on the CRPD.

Interested organizations are urged to review the full eligibility criteria and application details posted at the Fund’s website, http://www.disabilityrightsfund.org/grantmaking. In 2010, the Fund made 99 grants to organizations in 15 countries (India, Indonesia, Mexico, Ukraine; Nicaragua, Peru; Ghana, Uganda; Bangladesh; and Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu), totaling USD 2,222,123. Grants ranged from USD 5000 – 100,000 and supported CRPD skills-building, local rights advocacy, and national-level CRPD promotion, implementation and monitoring by DPO-led coalitions.

DRF’s donors include the American Jewish World Service, the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), the Open Society Institute, The Sigrid Rausing Trust, and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID).

Los subsidios en esta ronda apoyarán a organizaciones de personas con discapacidad (OPD) en Bangladés, Ghana, Nicaragua, 14 países insulares del Pacífico, Perú y Uganda.

Call for Nominations: Good Policies and Practices Promoting Disability Rights

The Essl Foundation and the World Future Council plan to acknowledge future just policies and exceptional examples of good practice that actively promote and implement the rights of persons with disabilities – both now, and for the future. Together, they aim not only to raise global awareness of exemplary policies and practices, but also to speed up political action “to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity”, as laid out in Article 1 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

With this announcement, they invite you to put forward your nominations.
The policies and practices can originate from different areas, from respect for inherent dignity, individual autonomy and independence, to full and effective participation and inclusion in society, to equality of opportunity, and accessibility. Nominated practices and, in particular, laws or policies, should be either of a regional or national nature. They should have been in existence long enough to prove their effective implementation and, most importantly, deliver identifiable improvements.

On 22-23 January 2012, there will be a Conference on “Future Just Policies: Persons with Disabilities” in Vienna, to present publicly and commend to, and discuss with, decision makers and parliamentarians, encouraging examples of political responsibility, in order to spread social innovation and development. In addition, we will be establishing a resource of exceptional examples of both good practice and good policy to be readily and easily accessible to all those interested, and who may benefit from it.

Disability Rights Fund Announces Letter of Interest Process for Bangladesh, Peru, and Uganda

BOSTON, MA – The Disability Rights Fund (DRF) is announcing a new letter on interest process for Disabled Persons’ Organizations (DPOs) in Bangladesh, Peru and Uganda. 

DRF is a grantmaking collaborative between donors and the global disability community which supports the human rights of persons with disabilities. Officially launched in March 2008, DRF empowers DPOs in the developing world and Eastern Europe/former Soviet Union to participate in ratification, implementation and monitoring of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CPRD). DPOs in Bangladesh, Peru and Uganda have received DRF support since 2008.

Now, instead of preparing full proposals as a first step, DPOs from Bangladesh, Peru and Uganda may submit a letter of interest as a first step to determine if their project fits DRF eligibility criteria. DPOs may apply as single organizations or partnerships to build skills and develop rights-based advocacy and monitoring on the CRPD. The activities should take place during a 12-month period beginning in January 2012. Grant awards range from USD 5,000 to 20,000.

Interested organizations are urged to review the eligibility criteria and letter of interest details posted at the Fund’s website, http://www.disabilityrightsfund.org/grant. The letter of interest process helps determine fit with DRF criteria and priorities before applicants expend time and resources to put together a full proposal. If eligible, applicants will be requested to submit a full proposal.  

Any questions on the letter of interest process should be directed to info@disabilityrightsfund.org. The deadline for receipt of Letters of Interest is June 15, 2011.

El DRF es una iniciativa de colaboración financiera entre donantes y la comunidad mundial de personas con discapacidad que apoya los derechos humanos de estas personas. Iniciado oficialmente en marzo de 2008, el DRF fortalece a las OPD del mundo en desarrollo y de Europa Oriental / antigua Unión Soviética a fin de que participen en la ratificación, aplicación y seguimiento de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad (CDPD). Opportunity for International Cooperation to Advance Disability Rights

Opportunity for International Cooperation to Advance Disability Rights

Human rights, poverty reduction, and humanitarian organizations are invited to join a global effort to collect and disseminate digital information to advance the global disability rights movement.  Organizations that do not specialize in disability are encouraged to respond to this opportunity, as are disability-focused groups and individual advocates. 

The Global Disability Rights Library (GDRL) project is strengthening its resource collection and identifying a total of 60 locations in developing countries with limited web access to receive a free, off-line copy of the digital library. The GDRL is a joint initiative of the United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) and the WiderNet Project at University of Iowa with funding support from USAID. 

The GDRL project is meant to bring disability rights knowledge to grassroots advocates and policy makers beyond the reach of the internet.  The project uses an innovative, off-line digital storage technology called eGranary units to deliver the library to locations in developing countries with limited internet access.  It is like having a slice of the internet inside a box.  In addition to the off-line version of the library, an on-line version will also be available.

Briefly, here are three ways that organizations or individuals can contribute:

  1. Suggest or contribute digital content!  The GDRL needs all languages and digital formats, especially accessible formats.  This includes both disability-focused and mainstream content on human rights, poverty, and humanitarian issues, capacity building for grassroots organizations, and accessibility software.
  2. Help identify potential deployment sites in developing countries! Share information about the GDRL with contacts and assist them with the application process as needed.  The application deadline is September 1, 2011.
  3. Consider offering, coordinating, or hosting volunteer support in building the digital library!  A network of volunteers and interns around the world are helping to identify important content for the library daily.

يقوم مشروع المكتبة الدولية لحقوق المعاقين (GDRL) الآن بتعزيز جمع مصادره وتقويتها حيث تمكن حتى الآن من تحديد  60 موقعا في بعض البلدان النامية التي تعاني من محدودية الوصول إلى شبكة الإنترنت لتتلقى نسخا مجانية من المكتبة الرقمية ، تلك التي يمكن إستخدامها دون الحاجة للوصول لشبكة الإنترنت. و تعد المكتبة الدولية لحقوق المعاقين (GDRL) نتاج مبادرة مشتركة  بين المجلس الأمريكي الدولي للمعوقين (USICD) ومشروع (WiderNet) بجامعة أيوا،  وبدعم مالي من الوكالة الأمريكية للتنمية الدولية.          

 لقد إبتكر مشروع المكتبة الدولية لحقوق المعاقين (GDRL) تكنولوجيا لتخزين المعلومات في صورتها الرقمية داخل أقراص صلبة أسماها وحدات إي قراناري                                  

حتى يتمكن من إرسال نسخ من المكتبة الرقمية إلى مناطق من البلدان النامية التي تعوزها خدمات الإنترنت. الإي قراناري  تشبه إلى حد بعيد  فكرة خدمات الإنترنت مع فارق وحيد هو أن خدمة الإنترنت موجودة في الفضاء السايبري بينما الإي قراناري هو عبارة عن إنترنت داخل صندوق. ومن مميزات هذه المكتبة الرقمية أنها إضافة إلى توفرها للمشتركين خارج شبكة الإنترنت ، يمكن أن تتوفر لهم  أيضا عبر شبكة الإنترنت. 

وبإختصار نعرض هنا طريقتين يمكن للمنظمات والأفراد أن يقدموا من خلالهما مساهماتهم:

1- إقترح أو ساهم بمواد وموضوعات رقمية. تحتاج المكتبة الدولية لحقوق المعاقين (GDRL) إلى كل اللغات وكل الأشكال والصيغ الرقمية ،

)Digital Formatsخاصة تلك الأشكال والصيغ الرقمية التي يسهل التعامل بها (

وفي ذلك الباب مفتوح لكل المنظمات التي تركز في عملها على المعاقين أو تلك التي تعمل في الحقل الإنساني العريض والذي يتضمن حقوق الإنسان ، مكافحة الفقر، المساعدات الإنسانية ، المنظمات التي تعمل على بناء القدرات في المستويات القاعدية ويمكن الإستعانة بأي برامج سهلة التصفح.

2-  إمكانية توفير أعمال التنسيق الإداري أو إستضافة مساهمات المتطوعين الإلكترونية في صدد بناء المكتبة الرقمية. إن وجود شبكة من المتطوعين والمتدربين حول العالم يساعد وبشكل يومي في تحديد وإختيار مواد هامة وضرورية للمكتبة.

Oportunidad para la Cooperación Internacional para Promover de Derechos

de los Personas con Discapacidades

Los organizaciones de los derechos humanos, de la reducción de la pobreza, y las organizaciones humanitarias están invitados a unirse a un esfuerzo mundial para colectar y compartir información digital para promover los derechos de los personas con discapacidades.  Las organizaciones que no se especializan en la discapacidades se les anima a responder a esta oportunidad, junto con grupos enfocados con la discapacidades y defendores.

El proyecto, La Biblioteca Mundial de Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidades (GDRL iniciales en ingles), está esforzando su colección de recursos y está identificando 60 sitios en los países en desarrollo con acceso limitado a Internet a recibir una copia gratuita de la biblioteca digital sin la necesidad del internet. El GDRL es una iniciativa conjunta a el Consejo Internacional de las Personsas con Discapacidades de los Estados Unidos (USICD iniciales en ingles) y El Proyecto WiderNet en la Universidad de Iowa con el apoyo financiero de USAID.

El proyecto GDRL utiliza una tecnología innovadora de archivos digitales sin la necesidad del internet se llama eGranary para entregar la biblioteca a sitios en los países en desarrollo con acceso limitado al Internet. Es como tener un pedazo del Internet dentro de una caja. Además de la versión sin necesidad del internet de la biblioteca, hay una versión en el web que también estará disponible.

Opportunité Pour La Collaboration Internationale D’ améliorer les droits des personnes handicapées

Des droits de l’homme, la réduction de pauvreté, et les organisations humanitaires sont invitées pour joindre un effort global de collecter et diffuser des informations digital pour avancer le mouvement global de droites d’handicapées. Des organisations qui ne se spécialisent pas dans l’incapacité sont encouragés à répondre à cette opportunité, ainsi que les groupes incapacité focalises et les avocats d’individu.

Le projet global de la bibliothèque de droites d’incapacité (GDRL) renforce maintenant sa collection de ressource et en identifiant un total de 60 endroits dans les pays en voie de développement avec le Web limité accédez pour recevoir une copie libre et en différé de la bibliothèque digital. Le GDRL est une initiative commune du Conseil international des Etats-Unis sur les incapacités (USICD) et le projet de WiderNet à l’université de l’Iowa avec l’appui de placement de l’USAID.

Проект- Глобальная библиотека по правам инвалидов (GDRL) в настоящее время укрепляет свой потенциал по сбору ресурсов и выявляет в общей сложности 60 мест в развивающихся странах с ограниченным доступом к сети интернета для получения бесплатной, автономной копии цифровой библиотеки. Проект GDRL является совместной инициативой Международного совета США по вопросам инвалидов (USICD) и проекта WiderNet Университета Айовы при финансовой поддержке Агентства США по международному развитию (USAID).

I graduated from the following program in 2009. I feel it can provide a good background in the field for people who want to work with people with disabilities in developing countries to support them in their struggle for human rights and to escape poverty. The most valuable course for me personally was a course in project design that helped me gain more confidence in my ability to evolve a clearly focused project idea and develop it into a cohesive plan of action.

The Master of Arts degree in International Development at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC focuses on advocating for and with persons with disabilities. Washington, DC – The Global Disability Rights Library project announces a call for organizations to apply to receive a free digital Global Disability Rights Library (GDRL).  Applications are open to disabled people’s organizations, universities, government agencies, and other organizations in developing countries.   Sixty organizations will receive the digital library to empower them to disseminate valuable disability rights knowledge and toolkits to their communities.

The goal of the GDRL project is to improve the lives of persons with disabilities in developing countries.  The project uses an innovative off-line digital storage technology to deliver digital resources to people beyond the reach of the internet.  The electronic library will be stored in a hard drive, called an “eGranary unit” that also contains an interface emulating the look and functioning of the web but without requiring actual internet connectivity.  Users will include disabled people’s organizations (DPOs), decision makers, government agencies, individual advocates, and others who cannot easily download information from the web.  Read more about the GDRL project at:

The GDRL is a collaborative effort between the U.S. International Council on Disabilities and the University of Iowa’s WiderNet Project with support from USAID to bring the best materials on disability rights and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to developing countries.

Ideal deployment site candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting and facilitating disability rights.  Successful applicants will have the organizational capacity to become a hub for disseminating disability rights information and will be inclusive of a diverse disability community. Job Post: Research Assistant

Job Summary:

The United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) is looking for a Research Assistant in the Washington, DC area. As a member of a small team, the Research Assistant will be responsible for providing support to the management team in implementing the daily activities of the Global Disability Rights Library (GDRL) project, a joint initiative of USICD and the University of Iowa WiderNet Project.

Responsibilities may include identifying, adding, and cataloguing material on disability rights for the eGranary digital library; managing information resources in a range of formats; communicating with authors and publishers to request copyright permission for inclusion of their content in the digital library; communicating with volunteers assisting the project; scheduling meetings to be held remotely among a global group of participants; maintaining a database of partners and potential partners and collaborators for the GDRL Project; and providing other research and administrative support to the management staff as needed. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY for Research on Accessibility of US-Funded Overseas Programs

NCD Announces Funding (Research) Opportunity
On May 13, the National Council on Disability in the US announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NCD-09-02) for a cooperative agreement to study “The Accessibility of U.S.-funded Overseas Facilities and Programs.”

NCD is interested in examining and understanding the responsibilities of U.S.-funded overseas facilities and programs, both public and private. NCD is seeking applicants to research and develop an NCD report with the following three components: 1) An analysis/examination of international law, to determine how U.S.-funded international development organizations will be required to comply with Article 32 of the Convention in those countries which have ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; and 2) an empirical follow-up to NCD’s 2003 report on how USAID is implementing its own disability policy overseas and its impact thus far, along with its compliance with Sections 501, 503, and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in its overseas operations. The report should review whether these protections against discrimination are being implemented by government employees and contractors working abroad, and will examine whether U.S.-funded programs are being operated in a manner that is accessible to and inclusive of people with disabilities; and 3) evaluate progress on NCD’s recommendations regarding the accessibility of U.S. embassies and missions, as well as Department of Defense (DoD)-funded programs and facilities.

TERMS OF REFERENCE
FACILITATION FOR GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR DISABLED GROUP OF TRANS NZOIA
Date 11th May 2009

Introduction
HANDICAP INTERNATIONAL is an international NGO specializing in the field of disability and development. A strong emphasis is placed on empowering people with disabilities through their integration into mainstream development activities and the provision of appropriate health and rehabilitation services to ensure equal opportunities for all.
Currently, Handicap International is working with 7 partner organizations in the USAID/AED funded projects in the field of Disability and HIV & AIDS. The group represents a cross section of disabilities including the deaf, blind and low vision, physically and intellectually disabled.

The main thematic areas of the project activities include;
• Policy and advocacy
• Behavior change communication
• Appropriate IEC materials for the PWD
• Stigma reduction

One of the main focus of the project is the provision of technical support and institutional strengthening by Handicap International to the partner organization to enable efficient and effective implementation of the HIV& AIDS activities.
Background to Sub Grantee organization

Even though HI is working with 7 organizations, this facilitator will only work with DIGROT (based in Kitale) to conduct governance training for the newly elected board. Profiles of the organization and justification for having the training is described below:

1. DIGROT
Background

DIGROT was started in 1990 as a self help group with 50 members with a merry go round to which they contributed 50 – 100 shillings. In 1998, the group opened an account with KCB bank and started a micro finance lending system. Members were given loans of ksh.500 to Ksh 2,000 at an interest rate of 10% p.a.

In 2000, they received a grant from DSDO (Poverty Eradication Programme) which they used to provide loans to their members. 14 members were successfully supported through this programme and 7 defaulted on repayment. DIGROT was trained by HI in 2004 on micro-credit management to address this challenge.

In the years 2001-2003 DIGROT approached HI with a goal of beginning HIV/AIDS awareness activities and in 2004 they wrote a proposal to HI on HIV and AIDS and Disability which was subsequently funded in May 2006 by USAID through AED.
Today DIGROT has representatives from different locations in Trans Nzoia district and was registered as a CBO in 2007. It currently has 224 registered members and each member pays 524 shillings registration fee with a renewal fee of 200 shillings annually. Not all members are fully registered and the money is kept in a savings account.

Justification
DIGROT as an organization for PWD has faced various problems and wrangles have interfered with their operations as an organization. To rectify this, the organization has recently undergone changes to make operations of the organization effective. Some of the changes in the recent past months includes; new staff on board, amendment of its constitution and election of new members to the board.

In line with this changes and growth for the organization, and the planned support for development of a strategic plan, HI intends to support DIGROT in training its new board on governance and good leadership with an aim of strengthening the new team, take stock of lessons learnt from past experiences and enhance prudent management of resources. This is also seen as an opportunity to augment a strong basis for conflict resolutions and create an environment for DIGROT members reconnect with the organizations mission and vision, strengthen its membership and development partners
Further to all the above, the evaluation conducted on the Disability, HIV and AIDS in 07/08 project reiterated Special focus on Disabled Group of Trans Nzoia (DIGROT) on capacity building and governance.

Objectives of the consultancy
The general objective of the training shall be to equip the participants with knowledge and skills on leadership and good governance to provide direction, control and management to the organization

Specific objectives
1. To help participants understand and appreciate the importance of good governance by
o Understanding the term governance and its pillars
o Appreciating the importance of leadership and governance to an organization in promoting institutional growth
o Understanding the role of the board in providing direction and prudent management in order to enhance long term membership values through enhancing corporate performance and accountability, whilst taking into account the interest of other stakeholders.

2. To facilitate a participatory formulation of a code of best practice in relation to governance that meets the priorities of the organizations and its stakeholders, based on their missions and objectives, and also considering national and international processes and trends in disability and development.

Expected results
1. DIGROT board is reoriented and is able to provide a healthy and sustainable advisory role.
2. DIGROT as an organization focuses on its vision and mission and establish a strong basis for conflict resolution

Proposed Methodology
HI proposes a pre-training assessment using questionnaires and a two days participatory training (Focus group discussion, Group work, role plays) session where the board members of DIGROT shall be brought together with an intent to learn and discuss leadership and good governance and development of code of best practice for the organization;

Expected Outputs
1. A Report of the pre-training assessment and governance training.
2. Code of best practice.
3. An action plan of the board that intends to put in place measures to enhance governance within their organization

Time frame
The assessment should be done 3 days before the actual training. The code of best practice will be developed by the board with support from the consultant during the training. The training is planned for 25th and 26th June 2009 and the report to be submitted by 3rd July 2009.

Location
DIGROT is located in Trans Nzoia district, Kitale town.

Budget
The total cost of the consultancy is Kshs. 30,000/=.

Qualification and Competencies:
The consultant should have:
• A masters degree, in the field of administration and/or management or in a relevant field
• Knowledge and experience in leadership and governance training and tool development for Community Based Organizations.
• Knowledge on disability issues is desirable
• Knowledge and experience of participatory approaches and facilitation.
• Ability to operate systematically and commitment to meeting deadlines

Dear colleagues,

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific (ESCAP) is putting together a brochure entitled, “Agents of
Change,” to promote the social model of disability and explain the changes that will need to be made to meet the requirements of Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Biwako Millennium Framework for Action, which is the regional policy guideline on disability. As a part of the brochure, we would like to have pictures and messages of mentors with disabilities from the region as they themselves are agents of change.

We would like to ask for your collaboration in this endeavor. We would likes to have active thematic photos of persons with different impairments in the region, who work in certain professions as well as a
caption or a statement about how you see “disability” and a message to
younger generations of persons with impairments in the region.

Thus far, we have a picture and a message of a deaf pharmacist from
Japan, are also waiting for a picture of a blind architect from the
Philippines and another picture from Kyrgyzstan. We are also planning on
shooting a picture of a pizza baker, inT hailand, who is physically
disabled. We would like to have pictures of a person with intellectual
disability, a picture of a person who is a survivor of psychiatry, a
picture of deaf blind person all of whom are working in certain professions which they are proud of. Moreover, we would like to particularly welcome pictures from South Asia and the Pacific.

Time is of the essence and we would appreciate your urgent attention
to this request. We would appreciate if you can e-mail us pictures (sharper images are appreciated) towards the end of this month 31 May 2009. The
brochure is in draft form at the moment and you contributions would help us finalize it. Before the brochure final draft goes out to the printer, a copy will be circulated for those who are interested for peer review. Let me know if you are interested in that process.

The African Studies Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands, has an annual award for the best Masters thesis on Sub-Saharan Africa by a student at a university in the Netherlands or in Africa. Any final-year student who has completed his/her Masters thesis with distinction (80% or higher or a Dutch rating of at least 8) can apply. The ASC specifically encourage students from Sub-Saharan Africa to submit their theses for this annual competition.

Any thesis thematically related to socio-geographical, economic, political, juridical or anthropological issues or focusing on the humanities such as history, religion and literature (but with the exception of language and/or semiotic studies) can be submitted. The thesis must be socially relevant and can be be written in English, French or Dutch.

The award consists of a price of 1000 euros. The winning thesis will also be published in the ASC African Studies Collection. Submitted theses may be (partially) published on The Broker’s website: www.thebrokeronline.eu.

“It’s in the telling of our stories that we discover how much of our experiences and learning we have in common with others. Stories make our connection with others and with the world real. They weave together our individual experiences to reveal a picture of a community, a group and a country.”

Introduction

The Secretariat of the African Decade for Persons with Disabilities (SADPD) in partnership with APC-Africa-Women and Women’sNet, invite you to submit an application to participate in a digital storytelling workshop. We are inviting people living and working in Africa who would like to empower others and affect change by documenting their journey and telling their story. Applicants must be:

(1) parents/carers of children with disabilities and youth
(2) young people with disabilities
(3) people working in organizations to promote the rights of children and youth with disabilities e.g. Advocates, students, CBR workers, teachers, journalists, information activists, content developers, programme officer/managers,

Participants will develop short videos reflecting the experiences of parents and youth with disabilities in particular with regards to challenges and successes in accessing inclusive education, health, employment and acceptance in their communities and country. Participants will also examine the power dimensions of story-telling and how we retain the authenticity of our own voice, as well as the voices of the people whose stories we document, preserve or disseminate.

Parents, youth and individuals working in the field have many stories to tell, but never have the time, knowledge, equipment and space to reflect, understand and tell their own stories, share their responses, understandings and experiences.

There is a large amount of information on the internet but very little that reflects the lived realities of those affected and people working in the field of disability in Africa.

The workshop aims to:
• document real-life stories of a cross-section of parents and youth with disabilities as well as those working in the field
• empower people to tell their own stories, while at the same time create a powerful advocacy tool that can be used in their country and beyond.
• develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills,
• enable parents and youth with disabilities to share and network amongst each other.

More about the workshop

In the workshop we will explore people’s own stories and learn how to develop a story line, use photo’s, video clips, and drawings to tell your story in an effective way.

There is space for twelve applicants who will participate in a five day digital storytelling workshop, 8 -12 June 2009.

In the month before the workshop delegates will need to join an online study group, collect content for their story (pictures etc) and begin to learn some of the software.

At the workshop participants will learn to use computer software and other equipment necessary for making a short (3-5 minutes) multimedia digital story.

The digital storytelling workshop is hands-on and computer intensive, requiring commitment and willingness to develop a short, personal story; learn new software and edit a short digital video of five minutes in length.

Digital storytelling is not like writing a formal document; it’s more like creative, autobiographical writing. To see an example, check out the website

In order to be eligible to participate, you must be able to attend all five days of the workshop, and be able to travel to South Africa to arrive by 7 June, departing 13 June 2009. Travel and accommodation will be sponsored by the SADPD. You must be willing to allow your story, or part of it, to be used in advocacy by SADPD and APC WNSP’s Take Back the Tech campaign. The workshop will be conducted in ENGLISH so other language speakers must have a good proficiency in English. Sign language and French / Portugese interpretation will be provided if necessary (Please motivate for this in application form).

This workshop is a chance to learn new skills and tell your story in a creative and visual format. It’s a lot of work . . . AND a lot of fun.

• The training is in English. Participants must speak and understand English but are welcome to produce their story in any language they choose. If however you require translation into French and Portuguese please motivate in your application.
• The story you tell has to be about you and your experiences. It can be about situations or events but it must be a personal story told in the first person
• The workshop requires a basic level of computer literacy.
• Applicants must be willing to avail themselves for future advocacy work or training in digital stories in their country.

About the Secretariat of the African Decade for Persons with Disabilities
The African Decade of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by the African Union for the period 1999 – 2009. The main goals of the African Decade are to raise awareness about the situation of the estimated 60-80 million persons with disabilities in the region and to identify solutions tailored to the African Experience that enhance participation, equality and empowerment of Africans with Disabilities. The overall aims and priorities of the Decade are stipulated in an AU- Continental Plan of Action. A Secretariat was established to facilitate the realization of these objectives.
The Secretariat is an international Non Governmental Organisation, established in 2004 by all the major Regional Disabled People’s Organisations to give a new dynamism to the implementation of the Continental Plan of Action. It is hosted, at the request of African Union by South Africa in Cape-Town where its headquarters are located. The mission of the Secretariat of the African Decade is to empower Governments, DPO´s, Decade steering committee’s (DSC) and development organizations to work in partnership to include disability and persons with disabilities into policies and programs in all sectors of society. About APC-Africa-Women

APC-Africa-women is the African regional network of the Association for Progressive Communications Women’s Networking Support Programme (APC WNSP). GLOBAL: Small grants programme for deaf children

Since 2002, Deaf Child Worldwide has supported organisations working to help deaf children overcome the barriers that contribute to their poverty and isolation.

Round 8 of Deaf Child Worldwide’s Small Grants Programme (SGP) opens on 19 March 2009 and ends 30 May 2009.

The SGP supports projects which show clear, measurable and sustainable improvements to the lives of deaf children and their families in developing countries.

Deaf Child Worldwide is focusing its activities in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania), South Asia (Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka) and Latin America (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru). You must be based in one of these countries to apply to SGP.

Applications are only accepted in ‘concept note’ format in English or Spanish. The deadline for submission of concept notes to Deaf Child Worldwide is 30 May 2009. Selected projects will start in January 2010.

Disability Rights Fund Releases 2009 Request for Proposals: 3 New Countries Targeted in First Round

BOSTON, MA – The Disability Rights Fund (DRF)—a groundbreaking grantmaking collaborative supporting the human rights of people with disabilities—today announced its first 2009 grants round, “Raising Our Voice,” targeted at disabled persons’ organizations (DPOs) in three countries: India, Mexico and Ukraine.

The broad objective of the Fund[1]—which was officially launched in March 2008—is to empower DPOs in the developing world and Eastern Europe/former Soviet Union to participate in ratification, implementation and monitoring of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CPRD).

In 2008, the Fund made one-year grants to 33 organizations in 7 countries (Ecuador, Nicaragua, Peru; Ghana, Namibia, Uganda; Bangladesh), totaling USD 800,000. Grants ranged from USD 5000 – 50,000 and supported CRPD awareness-raising, strengthening coalitions and networks, and rights advocacy.

In the first round of 2009 grantmaking, applicant organizations may apply within one of two categories: a) single organizations or partnerships and b) national DPO coalitions. Grants to single organizations will range from USD 5,000 to 30,000 and support efforts to build voice and visibility and to develop rights-based advocacy and monitoring on the CRPD. Grants to national DPO coalitions will range from USD 30,000 to 70,000 and will support advocacy toward ratification of the CRPD, passage of specific legislation to accord with the CRPD, or the production of shadow reports.

Interested organizations are urged to review the full eligibility criteria and application details posted at the Fund’s website, http://www.disabilityrightsfund.org/grant.html. Any questions on the proposal process should be directed to info@disabilityrightsfund.org by March 16. The deadline for applications is April 16, 2009.

As a donor representative on the DRF Steering Committee stated, “The launch of DRF’s 2009 grantmaking process marks an exciting expansion of our grantmaking to DPOs in three new countries and an effort to support both more marginalized sectors of the disability community and national coalitions advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.”

DRF’s donors include the American Jewish World Service, an anonymous founding donor, the Open Society Institute, The Sigrid Rausing Trust, and the United Kingdom Department for International Development.

BOSTON, MA – El Fondo por los Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad (DRF)—una innovadora iniciativa de colaboración que apoya los derechos humanos de estas personas—anunció hoy su primera ronda de financiamiento de 2009, “Alzando nuestra voz”, dirigida a organizaciones de personas con discapacidad (OPD) en tres países: India, México y Ucrania.

El Fondo[2]—iniciado oficialmente en marzo de 2008—tiene el objetivo amplio de empoderar a las OPD del mundo en desarrollo y Europa Oriental/antigua Unión Soviética con el fin de que participen en la ratificación, aplicación y seguimiento de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad (CDPD).

En 2008, el Fondo brindó apoyo financiero durante un año a 33 organizaciones en siete países (Ecuador, Nicaragua, Perú, Ghana, Namibia, Uganda y Bangladés), por un total de USD 800,000. Los subsidios, de USD 5,000 a 50,000, apoyaron la toma de conciencia respecto a la CDPD, el fortalecimiento de coaliciones y redes, así como la promoción y defensa de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad.

БОСТОН (США) – Фонд прав інвалідів (ФПI) – новаторський спільний проект з надання грантів на підтримку прав людей з інвалідністю – оголосив сьогодні про початок першого етапу виділення грантів на 2009 рік, «Піднесімо свій голос», на допомогу організаціям інвалідів (ОІ) у трьох країнах: Індії, Мексиці й Україні.

Загальним завданням Фонду[3], офіційно відкритого в березні 2008 року, є надання ОІ у країнах, що розвиваються, та Східній Європі/колишньому Радянському Союзі можливостей для участі в ратифікації, реалізації та моніторингу дотримання Конвенції ООН про права інвалідів (КПІ).

У 2008 р. Фонд надав річні гранти 33 організаціям семи країн (Еквадор, Нікараґуа, Перу; Ґана, Намібія, Уганда; Банґладеш) на загальну суму $800 000. Гранти, розміром від $5000 до $50 000, були використані на підвищення обізнаності громадськості про КПІ, зміцнення коаліцій та інших об’єднань організацій інвалідів, захисту їх прав.

Протягом першого етапу надання грантів 2009 р. організації-кандидати можуть подати заявки в одній з двох категорій: a) окремі організації чи партнерства та б) національні коаліції ОІ. Общей задачей Фонда[4], официально открытого в марте 2008 года, является предоставление ОИ в развивающихся странах и Восточной Европе / бывшем Советском Союзе возможностей для участия в ратификации, реализации и мониторинге выполнения Конвенции ООН о правах инвалидов (КПИ).

В 2008 г. Фонд предоставил годичные гранты 33 организациям семи стран (Эквадор, Никарагуа, Перу; Гана, Намибия, Уганда; Бангладеш) на общую сумму $800 000. Master’s Degree in International Development and Disability

Gallaudet University offers a Master’s Degree in International Development which prepares students to collaborate with a variety of groups which wish to include people with disabilities in their organizations, development projects and programs. The degree draws on theories and material from disability studies, international relations, public policy, research and evaluation. Students study significant topics in international relations that affect the economic and social development of countries worldwide, including:

· the theories and strategies of international development;
· the political, social and developmental issues surrounding disability that result in the continued oppression and marginalization of disabled people around the globe;
· the links between disability and development in the areas of human rights, poverty, the environment, health, gender, children, and conflict and emergency situations such as natural disasters;
· the inclusion of disability issues in mainstream development practice;
· participatory approaches in planning, implementation, monitoring, reviewing and evaluation, National and International policy framework, and;
· practice and theory of living and studying in cultures different from one’s own.

Applications for Gallaudet University’s Master’s Degree in International Development are due April 1st, 2009 in order to start in August 2009.

The United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) is looking for a part-time Education and Outreach Program Manager in Washington DC. As a member of a small team and working with the Executive Director, board members, and other volunteers, the Education and Outreach Program Manager will guide the development and implementation of a national awareness campaign that will include print and electronic outreach materials, constituent volunteer training, and general campaign coordination tasks.

Responsibilities include: communication about the rights and experiences of people with disabilities, training program organization, volunteer coordination, program evaluation, and deadline adherence.

Qualifications Summary
USICD seeks a dynamic, energetic leader with global perspective and experience in developing outreach and education programs. Excellence in writing, delivering presentations, and multiple media formats, including web publishing. Experience in training and managing volunteers, including volunteers with diverse abilities and talents. Ability to work collaboratively and to take direction. Commitment to the advancement of people with disabilities and knowledge of disability cultures in both the United States and internationally.

Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree in related field a plus. First-hand experience with disability preferred.

SEED Awards 2009 is open for submissions (deadline 16 March 2009; funds up to $40,000)

Apply now if:

– you are finding new ways of simultaneously improving incomes and strengthening livelihoods; tackling poverty and marginalisation; and managing and conserving natural resources and ecosystems; and

– you are developing a new concept that brings together people and organizations from different backgrounds to work in partnership, and partners are pooling their commitment and human, financial, and natural resources; and

– your project or enterprise is in the early stages of development and keen to increase its impacts; and

– your project or enterprise is locally-led, with strong community engagement, and takes place in a country or countries with a developing economy or economy in transition; and

– your project or enterprise displays entrepreneurship in its broadest sense and shows a proven concept that has market potential; it must demonstrate financial sustainability in the long term and should have a draft business plan.

Internship for Lawyers Working on Disability in Africa
Equality Programme

INTERIGHTS’ Equality Programme is pleased to invite applications for an internship as part of the development and implementation of its work to advance the rights of people with disabilities in Africa. The three-month internship will begin in April 2009 and will be based in London.

This full-time placement will provide an opportunity for a lawyer with knowledge of disability issues and litigation experience in Africa to develop their legal skills whilst assisting our programme with:

· Legal research on international and comparative human rights law and practice with respect to the protection of the rights of people with disabilities;

· Preparation of materials for legal training on the application and development of equality standards;

· Strategic programme development.

Where possible, the intern may attend meetings with human rights practitioners, human rights lectures, or visit other international or national human rights organisations based in London.

INTERIGHTS will arrange and pay for travel. The intern will receive a monthly salary of £1,200. Accommodation is not provided but INTERIGHTS can advise on finding a suitable place to stay.

World Bank International Essay Competition 2009: Climate Change (with Photo and Video Competitions)

The World Bank International Essay Competition 2009: Climate Change
[Also video competition and photo competition, with smaller prizes.]

[Note to We Can do readers: although this competition is not targeted specifically at disability issues per se, it could be an opportunity for talented young people with disabilities to consider competing. It also could be an opportunity for any young person with an interest in disability issues to consider how people with disabilities might be impacted differently from other people by climate change and how these challenges can be addressed.]

Open to youth ages of 18 and 25, from all countries of the world. Prizes range from US$200-US$3,000 for winning entries. Deadline to enter: February 22, 2009.

WANTED: The Next Generation of ‘Green’ Entrepreneurs

Climate change has been identified as one of the biggest global threats of our time. Scientists agree that global warming and extreme climate phenomena can be increasingly attributed to human activity – in particular, heavy emission of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, resulting from industrial processes.

Solutions to those pressing problems could lie in the rapidly growing ‘green economy’: environmentally sustainable enterprises, technological innovations (new sources of clean, renewable energy), energy efficiency measures, economic incentives for low-carbon choices, etc. How can youth contribute?

The Essay Competition 2009 invites youth to share ideas on:

How does climate change affect you?
How can you tackle climate change through youth-led solutions?

Please answer both questions:

1. How does climate change affect you, your country, town or local community? How do you think it will affect you in the future? Think about the consequences for employment, health, security and other areas of your life.

2. What can you do, working together with your peers, to address the problem of climate change in your country, town or local community? Think specifically about the role of youth-led initiatives in the ‘green economy’.

The International Essay Competition is open to all young people, students and non-students alike, between the ages of 18 and 25, from all countries of the world.

If you are older than 18 and younger than 25 on June 15, 2009, you are eligible to participate.

This year for the first time the Essay Competition also invites the submission of short videos and photos!

I have the pleasure of announcing that the ILO International Training Centre is offering a course on “Labour market inclusion of people with disabilities” (course A901286). The course language will be English and registration is open to staff involved in policy making, planning, implementation, research of Ministries, Social Partners and other institutions working on disability and social inclusion. Please note that this course is especially designed for participants from developing and transition countries.

The course programme offers the possibility to learn more about legislation, mechanisms and mechanisms for labour market inclusion of people with disabilities in developing and transition countries and provides the opportunity to get to know different international experience and good practice.

The conditions of participation are the following:

COSTS
The price of the course is EURO 2,950. This amount includes the cost of training and subsistence (full board and lodging at the Turin Centre).

FELLOWSHIPS
The ILO International Training Centre offers a number of partial fellowships to co-finance the costs of the course. If you wish to apply for a fellowship, please contact us as soon as possible. The partial fellowships are for EURO 1,200, the difference is EURO 1,750.

AIR TRAVEL
Not included is the cost of international air travel from the country of origin to Turin, which has to be covered by the participants.

2. A “letter of commitment” by the participant’s organization (or a donor organization) stating that it will cover:

MIUSA is currently accepting applications from professionals with disabilities from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Guatemala for MIUSA’s International Leadership, Employment, and Disability (I-LEAD) Professional exchange program in Eugene, Oregon USA, March 15 – April 5, 2009.

MIUSA strongly encourages professionals with all types of disabilities to apply, including people who have hearing, visual, psychiatric, learning and health related disabilities.

Applications and two references are due by January 16, 2009. However, late applications will be accepted.

The 2009 I-LEAD Professional exchange program will bring together influential leaders in government, business, education, community development, and disability rights organizations who demonstrate the capacity and commitment to expand employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Latin America.

ALOJAMIENTO Y TRANSPORTE:
• Se proveerá alojamiento simple pero cómodo con habitaciones y baños compartidos.

SCHOLARSHIP: For Students Using Wheelchairs in US Colleges

AmeriGlide is holding a competition for a $500 scholarship for students who ride a manual or electric wheelchair. The deadline for entering this competition is January 2, 2009. Students must be enrolled in two-year or four-year accredited undergraduate university programs in the United States. Students may be from countries outside the US, but must hold a valid student visa. Applicants should also have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

In order to compete for the scholarship, interested students must submit an essay with a minimum of 500 words that answers the following question: “The American with Disabilities Act was established in July of 1990. Does this law do enough to help prevent discrimination and improve the lives of those who are mobility challenged? How has the American with Disabilities Act affected you?”

Foreign students in the United States will note that the Americans with Disability Act does protect their rights while they are in the United States and interacting with US-based institutions. The ADA requires US universities to provide reasonable accommodations to all students with disabilities, regardless of their country of origin. For example, if a class is initially scheduled in a classroom that is not accessible to a wheelchair rider, then the university must arrange to move the class to a more accessible location as needed.

JOB POST: QuickBooks Training for Sub Grantees, Kenya, Handicap International, Dec 15-19, 2008

This short-term consultancy position requires someone to provide a five-day training workshop in the use of QuickBooks from December 15 to 19, 2008. Profiles and proposals must be submitted by December 10, 2008.

TERMS OF REFERENCE: QUICKBOOKS TRAINING FOR THE SUB GRANTEES

BACKGROUND

HANDICAP INTERNATIONAL (HI) is an international NGO engaged in the field of disability and development. A strong emphasis, however, is placed on empowering people with disabilities through their integration into mainstream development activities and the provision of appropriate health and rehabilitation services to ensure equal opportunities for all.

Currently, HI is working with 6 partner organizations in the USAID/AED funded projects in the field of Disability and HIV & AIDS. The group represents a cross section of disabilities including the deaf, blind and low vision, physically and intellectually disabled.

The main thematic areas of the project activities include;
• Policy and advocacy
• Behavior change communication
• Appropriate IEC materials for the PWD
• Stigma reduction

One focus of the project is to provide technical support, build the capacities of the partner organization and provide funding to enable them implement HIV& AIDS activities.

JUSTIFICATION

Good financial management practice helps an organization to attain effective and efficient use of resources and be more accountable to donors and other stakeholders. Hence, HI would wish to commission training in QuickBooks for her partners as a requisite to ensuring quality and accurate financial record keeping and reporting on usage of donor funding. HI further wishes to install QuickBooks accounting packages for all the partner organizations that are not yet compliant to the package and final set up a cut-off period for compliance by all the organization.

BACKGROUND OF PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS

We have detailed as underneath a brief profile of each of the organizations that we are currently collaborating with as a basis of your understanding the scope of each partner. However, it may be worth noting that the proposed training may also include other partners we are yet to bring on board.

DDSHG (DANDORA DEAF SELF HELP GROUP)

Dandora is an organisation of deaf people that was formed over 10 years ago; Structural formation was very minimal in the initial years. Thus, Handicap international organized governance training which has since increased cohesiveness among the group membership. This is expressed through an increase of paid membership, while several board members who were also employees of the organization resigned as employees to pave for a clear segregation of interests. The organization is situated in Dandora area of Nairobi province.

On overall, the organization has sound and consistent financial management and reporting systems. In the period under review the organization was funded to a tune of Ksh. 1,996,453.00 (one million nine hundred ninety six thousand four hundred fifty three only)

BLINK (Blind and Low Vision Network)

Blink’s beneficiaries are primarily blind and/or persons with very low vision. A key issue for this organisation is that their beneficiaries are in different geographical locations. However, they have focal persons in each district that they meet weekly to discuss the needs of the communities. The board members are also representatives of different Community Based Organizations. They function as resource persons and may have their expenses reimbursed and allowances for services provided.

The organisation refers to itself as a Community Based Organization network that helps the individual Community Based Organisations provide support and care to their communities through awareness creation activities on HIV/AIDS. The discussions in the communities are generally broader than the HIV/AIDS, so the meetings are used as an opportunity to discuss other issues.

Blink has received training in project design and management including M&E frameworks, resource mobilisation, programme reporting, financial management, and managing special needs projects (e.g. reproductive health, HIV/AIDS counselling for disabled people, VCT testing). The counsellors are now better equipped to inform visually impaired people about their test results. Their reporting has also improved.

As regards the governance function, both board members and staff members now understand their roles and what is expected of them thanks to the capacity building initiatives by HI. The board members are also informed about the organisation’s activities by the Director on a regular basis.

The backbone of the spending in the organization is mainly logistical, thus the need for well tailored internal checks and balances mechanism that ensures prudence in the commitment of expenditure. In the current grant period the organisation was obligated to spend Ksh.2,728,962.00(two million seven hundred twenty eight thousand nine hundred sixty two only).

KEDAN (Kenya Disabled Action Network)

KEDAN is a youth organisation which is only 4 years old and covers several types of disability, contrary to most of the other disabled people’s organisations that target a particular category of disability (blind, deaf, physically impaired, and albinos – for capacity reasons they are currently unable to include mentally handicapped. The organisation started out with mobilisation, awareness creation and experience sharing and has only actively implemented programme activities since 2005. . They have developed an action plan for the next couple of years which they intend to implement, despite their limited resources, with the help of their motivated supporters.

As regards the needs of the organisation, KEDAN’s staff feels that they need to strengthen their competencies in the area of resource mobilisation, in particular proposal writing. They also need help to manage their existing resources better. Finally, they wish to develop their staff competencies in areas such as leadership and management, IT, and income generating activities.

In the current grant period the group is obligated to spend Ksh. 2,388,811.00 (two million three hundred eighty eight thousand eight hundred and eleven only).

NFSS (Nairobi Family Support Services)

NFSS was started in 1982 by Actionaid and registered as a local NGO in 1996. The Programme Coordinator has been the leader ever since. The organisation receives funding from HI France and from the AED-programme and is also supported by Sense International and the Liliane Foundation.

The mission of the organisation is to raise awareness on HIV-AIDS and disability through their work with community groups and attempt to change the stigma of disabled people in the community and their low-self esteem. The peer educators meet twice a month to exchange experiences.

NFSS has strong networking capacity. The organisation partners with different institutions, especially through referrals: the Liliane foundation (support for disabled people’s surgery), specialised schools (educational assessment), the Ministry of Health, government hospitals, networks of therapists. This gives the organisation high credibility in the communities.

NFSS would like to support “merry-go-rounds” (revolving credit systems), but as most of their beneficiaries are not working, it is difficult to collect the funds.

Until 2005, Action Aid funded a microfinance programme for the parents of disabled children. These loans were considered by some as grants. After having received several loans, and hence being allowed to loan greater sums, gradually, some of the beneficiaries disappeared with their funds. Only about 50% of these parents are able to continue repaying their microloans.

NFSS has an internal control manual but it has not enhanced its usage. There is therefore need to educate the staff on the importance of these procedures and its implementation. In the current grant period the organization is obligated to spend Ksh. 2,211,847.00 (two million two and eleven thousand eight hundred forty seven only).

DIGROT (Disabled Group of Trans Nzoia)

DIGROT was started in 1990 as a self help group of 50 members on the concept of a merry go round. Since 1998, the group has operated a bank account with Kenya Commercial Bank, Kitale Branch. The group started a micro finance lending system; Members were given loans of ksh.500 to Ksh 2,000 at an interest rate of 10% p.a.

In 2000, they received a grant from District Social Development Officer (Poverty Eradication Programme) which they used to loan their members. 14 members were successfully loaned through this programme and 7 defaulted to repay back. DIGROT was trained by HI in 2004 on micro-credit management.

In the year 2001-2003 they approached HI on HIV/AIDS awareness and in 2004 they wrote a proposal to HI on HIV and AIDS and Disability which was funded in May 2006.

DIGROT has representatives from different locations in Trans Nzoia district and was registered as a Community based Organization (CBO) in 2007. DIGROT is a network of DPOs (Disabled Persons Organizations) in Trans Nzoia district and usually conducts quarterly meetings with representatives from these DPOs.

It currently has 224 registered members and each member pays 524 shillings registration fee with a renewal fee of 200 shillings annually. Not all members are fully registered and the money is kept in a savings account.

The organization lacked well defined operational systems and procedures but has been subjected to vigorous capacity building initiatives, the organizations has also just finalized a recruitment exercise where competent and qualified staff have been brought on board.

In the current partnership agreement the organization is obligated to spend Ksh. 1,131,139.00 (one million one thirty one thousand one hundred thirty nine only)

UDPK (United Disabled Persons of Kenya)

United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK) is an umbrella network of persons with disability in Kenya and was established in 1989 with a membership of the following organizations – Kenya Union of the Blind (KUB), Kenya National Association of the Deaf (KNAD) and Kenya Society of the Physically Handicapped (KSPH), Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped (KSMH). Kenya Autism Society joined later to champion issues of parents of mentally challenged Albinos and autism.

Currently UDPK has about 200 member organizations. UDPK was formed so that disabled persons could be united and speak with one voice, advocacy and lobbying remains the core objective.

Membership is both by organizations of and for disabled person. UDPK has five full time staff and 13 Field Officers working in different regions and is headquartered in Westlands, along Waiyaki Way. The mission of UDPK is to unite all persons, groups of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to advocate for disability issues on a united front. The vision for the organization is a barrier free society where Persons with Disabilities (PWDS) enjoy access to services in all spheres of life.

In the current grant agreement the organization is mandated to spend Ksh.2, 542,345.00 (two million five forty two thousand three hundred forty five only).

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The general objective of this consultancy is to conduct an application based QuickBooks Training for management and finance staff of Handicap International partners so as to reflect through proper recording keeping and accurate financial reporting an accountable and effective use of donor funds as outlined in the individual budgets of the funded organizations and based on properly defined internal control systems, proper administrative and logistical management.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
• To design and develop a training programme that will equip the trainees with relevant skills and knowledge in Quickbooks

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY

HI proposes to hold a five day residential application based training for management and financial staff from each of the partnering organizations.

HI also proposes that the consulting firm shall at all times seek clarifications and/or guidelines from HI on all issues that are not clear and/or appear ambiguous in their opinion. For the purposes of this Training, the contact person for HI is Mr. Erick Karani, the Project Finance Officer.

TASKS OF THE CONSULTANT

1. Development of a training curriculum that shall conform to the afore-mentioned specific and general objectives and/or all other related aspects of QuickBooks financial package.

2. Carry out an evaluation of the training and produce a training report.

EXPECTED RESULTS

At the end of the training, the trainees will be able to:-
• Explain the essence and challenges of QuickBooks.
• Understand the usage and benefits of QuickBooks in financial management.
• Establish the relationship between QuickBooks reports and external reporting.
• Outline the QuickBooks main menu.
• Set up Accounts in the Quickbooks software
• Key in data and prepare accounting documents.
• Record General Journals.
• Prepare Bank Reconciliations.
• Develop Internal and Donor Reporting formats.
• Prepare monthly/annually reports.
• Correct Errors.

TIME FRAME

The training is expected to commence on 15th and end on 19th December, 2008 close of business.

QUALIFICATIONS

The consultant should have :-
• Relevant educational back ground and experience in teaching QuickBooks in a reputable institution.
• Relevant experience in working as a consultant/ lecturer is added advantage.
• Excellent analytical, writing and communication/facilitation skills.

The seventh CavinKare Ability Awards will be conducted in Chennai in the month of February next year. An all India event that is conducted every year by CavinKare in collaboration with Ability Foundation an NGO, to salute and honor the brave and courageous with physical limitations. This recognition is an accolade to the pedigree of exceptional people with talent, who have exhibited excellence in accomplishing challenges in the face of adversity.

The awards salute personal triumphs, the extraordinary spirit of achievement, a looking beyond one’s own self and physical limitations and the universality of human rights.

Jointly instituted by CavinKare(P) Ltd and Ability Foundation, the awards come in two categories

CavinKare ABILITY Award for Eminence: This is a single award given to just one individual, that salutes the exemplary achievement of an individual with disability who has not only overcome great odds towards achievement but has also contributed significantly to society by initiating an organisation of his/her own. The award carries a citation, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

v Nominees should be persons with disability and be Indian citizens.
v A minimum of two references must be cited in the nomination form.
v For the award for Eminence, the nominee should have worked in India in his/her field of service for a minimum of three years. The result of the nominee’s social entrepreneurship should be evident and continuing at the time of nomination.

· CavinKare ABILITY Mastery Awards: These are two awards given to two individuals with disability in recognition of their extraordinary achievement in field of their choice – be it arts, film, medicine, science, industry, technology, education, community development, human rights, sports or more. The awards carry a citation, a trophy, and a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh, each.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

v Nominees should be persons with disability and be Indian citizens.
v A minimum of two references must be cited in the nomination form.

SELECTION PROCESS:
The screening process includes scrutiny and short listing, based on the details given in the nomination form. Site visits and reference checks by regional representatives will then further shortlist nominees, following which, an eminent jury will select the final awardees.

The completed nomination forms must be sent ONLY by post and must reach Ability Foundation on or before November 30, 2008 Nomination forms that are sent by Email/fax or incomplete/late submission WILL NOT be accepted.

October 17, 2008 – World Learning announces a solicitation under the USAID funded Grants Solicitation and Management activity. Using funding provided by USAID Bureau of Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance, World Learning anticipates awarding five to seven SPANS/GSM grants under this RFA and that each sub-grant will be for up to $2,000,000 for a three year period(February 2009 – January 2012.) *Applications must be received by November 17, 2008 at 1 PM EST.*

The Special Programs to Aid the Needs of Survivors (SPANS) Grants Solicitation and Management (GSM) is an umbrella grant making mechanism which supports service delivery, training and related activities aimed at assisting vulnerable populations. Through a five-year Cooperative Agreement from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), World Learning supports USAID’s goal of improving the health and well being of specific vulnerable populations, including displaced children and orphans, war victims, people with disabilities, and victims of torture.

On behalf of USAID’s Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance, World Learning will award sub-grants in a number of thematic areas such as Displaced Children and Orphan’s Fund (DCOF), Leahy War Victims Fund, People With Disabilities and Wheelchairs Fund, and the Victims of Torture Fund (VWF). World Learning administers the SPANS/GSM grant making process from identifying potential grantees, to soliciting applications, to monitoring project implementation, to close-out.

Over the course of FY 09, World Learning anticipates issuing three Request for Applications (RFA) on behalf of the Wheelchair Fund, DCOF, and LWVF. All RFAs are determined by USAID.

World Vision International Peace Prize NOMINATIONS Sought

World Vision International Peace Prize

[It is my hope that We Can Do readers will consider whether they might know an individual with disabilities, or a disability-oriented organization, that might qualify for the World Vision International Peace Prize. The winning organization will receive $5,000; the winning individual will receive $1,000. The deadline to submit nominations is February 15, 2009. The following text is copy/pasted from the World Vision guidelines for the awards, which can also be downloaded in PDF format. The guidelines are also available in French and in Spanish.]

Guidelines

Purpose
The purpose of the World Vision International Peace Prize is to annually recognize and honor one individual who is a catalyst for peacemaking and one organisation which champions the integration of peacebuilding into relief, development and advocacy programmes.

Two award recipients shall be named annually under this World Vision International Peace Prize:
1. Peacebuilding Award – given to an agency or organisation that excels at integrating peacebuilding into relief, development or advocacy activities, and mobilising communities to build a durable peace
2. Peacemaking Award – given to an individual who has taken risks and excelled in being a catalyst in either bringing conflicted parties together to resolve a conflict or in enabling a peace process that engages peacemakers, mediators and people of moral authority who bring hope that a significant destructive conflict can be resolved.

The first award focuses on World Vision’s area of greatest expertise in peacebuilding, namely integrating peacebuilding in relief, development and advocacy. Key programmatic themes of World Vision include the role of children, youth and women in building peace.

The second award focuses on World Vision’s secondary area of focus, making a significant contribution to community-based peacemaking, serving as a catalyst and building bridges so that other organisations and individuals can assist in resolving destructive conflicts that put all development at risk.

Description of award
The World Vision International Peace Prize is given annually in honor and memory of Steve Williams (1951-2007), World Vision UK Senior Policy Advisor on Peace and Conflict. Steve brought vast experience in peacebuilding, conflict analysis and policy analysis to World Vision UK, and served as the Co-convener of PaxNet, the World Vision global peacebuilding network.

He distinguished himself not only within World Vision but within the peace community around the world as one who integrated his conflict analysis and policy work, was committed in his personal, family and work life to work for peace and reconciliation, strongly supported programmes of Children as Peacebuilders, and was a great advocate for peace with justice.

It is in this spirit that the World Vision International Peace Prize was established to honor his life, his work and his memory. The awardees each year may be little known to the public but each will serve as profound examples of peacemaking and peacebuilding in a world of conflict.

Nomination and selection process principles

Eligibility

Organisations and individuals that are external or internal to World Vision International may be nominated with equal consideration. Local community-based organisations as well as global humanitarian and development organisations are eligible for nomination.

Qualifications
The Awards Committee will give particular attention and consideration to nominees who mobilise children, youth and women in peacebuilding. A nomination will be strongest when the organisations or individuals demonstrate that their work and programme is built on careful context and conflict analysis, and produces credible policy and advocacy influence that contributes toward peace.

Monetary Prize and Trophy
Each organisation and individual who is awarded the World Vision International Peace Prize will receive both a monetary award ($5,000 for an organisation and $1,000 for an individual) and a physical trophy with the award designation.

Use of the award
The monetary award is to be used at the sole discretion of the awardees to further the work of the individual or the organisation in their continued role in peacemaking and peacebuilding.

Procedures for nomination
Nominees may come either from within or from outside World Vision. Self-nominations are accepted. The World Vision International Peace Prize Nomination Form can be found online at www.wvi.org/peaceprize. It should be completed in full and sent by email to: wvi_peaceprize@wvi.org by the final day for submission: February 15, 2009.

Selection process
The World Vision International Director of Peacebuilding and the Peacebuilding Unit will initially review all applications to determine which ones meet the criteria and are the strongest candidates. A vetting process will assess the nominations and develop a preliminary list of finalists. The entries from those finalists will be posted online for one month, allowing the global peacebuilding community to view, vet and rank the nominees. A short list of nominees for each prize will then be submitted to an International Peace Prize Awards Committee which will review the nominations and select the winner in each category. Decisions of the Committee will be final.

June 30, 2009 Awardees informed privately of their selection

Awards will be presented by the World Vision International President or designee on the International Day of Peace, September 21, 2009.

UNDEF Third Round of Funding

The Third Round of Funding for the United Nations Democracy Fund – UNDEF – will be conducted from 10 November to 31 December 2008.

Applications for UNDEF funding can be made online through a link from the UNDEF website that will be open from 10 November 2008. Applications must be written in English or French, the two working languages of the United Nations. Applications can only be made through the UNDEF online facility. Applications sent by E-mail, fax or post will NOT be accepted.

Applicants should be aware that UNDEF funding rounds are highly competitive. In the Second Round there were more than 1800 applications while only 83 projects were funded. Accordingly, the quality of the application will be an important attribute. Applicants are therefore advised to read very carefully the Project Proposal Guidelines (PDF format, 87 Kb) on the UNDEF website. Applications can be saved in the system and should be submitted only when applicants are confident that all the relevant information has been provided.

Finally, UNDEF is a democracy fund, not a development fund or a human rights fund. Project proposals that strengthen the voice of civil society in the various democratic processes will be more likely to gain acceptance than project proposals less directly related to democracy promotion. It is anticipated that the vast majority of applicants and short-listed project proposals will emanate from civil society organisations.

New Global Email Network of Women with Disabilities Launches

Dear friends,

As you may know, a group of over 50 participants from 20 countries and various sectors (civil society, governments, academia, international organizations and private sector) met in Quebec, Canada on August 26-27 for a Global Summit on the Rights of Women with Disabilities. All Interational Disability Alliance organizations were invited to send a representative, and were actively engaged in the discussions.

The Summit was a great opportunity to talk about the key challenges facing women with disabilities worldwide, network, exchange ideas and take actions for us to “claim our rights”. Together, the Summit participants decided to form a new global network of women with disabilities and allies, charged with raising awareness and carrying out advocacy.. Attached and below is the Call for Action presented at the close of the Summit.
As the Call to Action say, this network aims to be inclusive of women of all ages from all parts of the world with ALL types of disabilities.

In order to move forward, an email list for the “International Network of Women With Disabilities” (INWWD) has been set up, and interested individuals are invited to join the email list by sending a message to: inwwd-subscribe@yahoogroups.com In this email, please include your name, affiliation and whether you agree to following principles:

Provisional guidelines for membership in the INWWD email list:
– Members accept the principle that this is a network OF women with all types of disabilities from all over the world, led by women with disabilities.
– Members of this email list are committed to the philosophy of women with disabilities advocating for themselves and identifying the issues of women with disabilities.
– Members support the principles in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
– Members of this email list support the goals of this network, which include sharing our knowledge and experiences, speaking up for our rights, bringing about change and inclusion in our communities, and empowering women with disabilities to be leaders of today and tomorrow.
– Members agree that the work of the network should be equally relevant to all women with disabilities irrespective of the type of disability or geographical location.
– Members agree to be respectful and constructive.

The Summit participants also created a Working Group to develop the terms of reference for our network – to be finalized by the network over email by the end of the year. GLOBAL SUMMIT on the Rights of Women with Disabilities
A Call for Action: Claiming Our Rights

Women with disabilities have been the world’s forgotten sisters. There are over 300 million women with disabilities around the world, representing a huge and important part of society. We face multiple forms of discrimination.

We, the participants in a global Summit on the Rights of Women with Disabilities, held in Quebec, Canada, in August 2008, have come together to claim our rights, through the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the human rights framework. Today, we take the first, historic step by creating a global network of women with disabilities, which must include women with ALL types of disabilities from ALL over the world.

We will use this network to share our knowledge and experiences, speak up for our rights, bring about change and inclusion in our communities, and empower women with disabilities to be leaders of today and tomorrow. We invite ALL women with disabilities to join us and we will achieve these goals TOGETHER.

Pacific Human Rights Award Nominees Sought

Nominations sought for 2008 RRRT/SPC Pacific Human Rights Award
[We Can Do readers will note that this human rights award is not specific to disability rights work. However, this nomination process could be an opportunity to bring attention to people working to promote disability rights in the Pacific Region. The deadline for submitting nominations is October 31, 2008.

Nominations sought for 2008 RRRT/SPC Pacific Human Rights Award

The Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (RRRT/SPC) is seeking nominations for the 2008 RRRT/SPC Pacific Human Rights Award.

This year the award is unique in that it will honour courageous and innovative individuals for “outstanding achievement in the field of human rights” – and not organisations, as it has previously – to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights.

The closing date for the receipt of nominations is 31 October 2008, and the award will be presented at a ceremony in Suva, Fiji Islands, in early December 2008, marking International Human Rights Day.

What is the RRRT/SPC Pacific Human Rights Award?
In 1998, RRRT won the prestigious UNICEF Maurice Pate Award for its pioneering work in promoting human rights education for women and children in the Pacific.

RRRT now offers a similar award for the region to encourage the development of a human rights culture that will protect the rights and promote the well-being of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups. This is the first year RRRT has offered the award to individuals.

The award is an opportunity not only to give public recognition to the achievements of the recipients themselves, but also to send a clear message to human rights defenders region wide that the Pacific community is grateful for, and supports, their tireless efforts to promote all human rights for all.

Nominations for the 2008 Award
The 2008 Award will be presented at an event in Suva in December 2008 as part of the annual commemoration of Human Rights Day. Nominations can be submitted on the form attached or downloaded online from www.rrrt.org and should be received at the indicated email, postal address or fax number by 31 October 2008. Organisations or individuals can nominate.

Nominees must:
1. Be Pacific Island nationals.
2. Have shown strong commitment to social justice and human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
3. Have demonstrated a high degree of commitment in their personal lives and actions to the framework of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This framework takes for granted the integrated nature of human rights – i.e that they are universal, inalienable, interconnected and indivisible. This means that civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights cannot be separated.
4. Have demonstrated extraordinary and exemplary initiative in promoting and advancing human rights or human rights education at a national and/or regional level.
5. Have made significant contributions to human rights promotion or protection in their countries through an extended period of dedicated work (paid or voluntary), taking an explicit rights-based approach.
6. Have contributed to positive change in their countries.
7. Not be employed by RRRT or SPC.

Note: The award can be granted posthumously.

Echoing Green Award for Innovative New Organizations

Note: The application deadline for this funding opportunity is December 1, 2008. This is an annual opportunity, so if you miss the 2008 deadline, then check the Echoing Green website for information on opportunities in subsequent years. Some of Echoing Green’s past recipients have included a few new organizations based in developing countries. One past recipient is Eric Rosenthal, who used his Echoing Green fellowship to establish Mental Disability Rights International. Applications and inquiries should be directed to Echoing Green, NOT We Can Do.

Each year, Echoing Green awards 20 two-year fellowships to entrepreneurs creating new social change organizations. Fellows receive up to $90,000 in seed funding and technical support to turn their innovative ideas into sustainable organizations. These fellowships offer them the opportunity to develop and test their ideas. We accept applications from citizens of all nationalities, working in any country.

This is not a scholarship program. Our fellows do not develop their ideas in an academic setting. Our fellows work in the community. They launch, manage and grow organizations that implement and continually expand their ideas for creating lasting social change.

Echoing Green seeks individuals or partnerships (organizations led by two people) with:

* Innovative solutions to significant social problems
* Strategies to create high-impact, sustainable change in people’s lives
* The ability to grow and lead a new organization

The application process is open to citizens of all nationalities, working in any country.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for an Echoing Green Fellowship:

* Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
* Applicants must have sufficient English fluency to participate in interviews and Echoing Green events.
* Organizations must be the original idea of the applicant.
* Organizations must be independent and autonomous. Organizations cannot be considered independent or autonomous if they are started under the direction of an existing organization. The applicant must be the primary decision maker for the organization’s development and management. Generally, organizations with fiscal sponsors are still considered autonomous.
* Organizations must be in a start-up phase. To be considered a start-up, the applicant may have been running the organization full-time for approximately two years and Echoing Green’s financial support should qualify it as a major/primary early funder. Applicants who have only worked on their organization on a part-time basis or have yet to start an organization are generally considered eligible.
* Applicants must make a full-time commitment to the organization’s development. A full-time commitment is defined as a minimum of 35 hours per week; it is expected that the fellow would resign from their current employment to dedicate themselves full-time to their initiative.
* Partnerships (organizations led by two individuals) may apply. Both partners must make a full-time commitment of no fewer than 35 hours per week to the development of the organization.
* Applicants must commit to lead their organization for at least two years. Students who apply should note that they will not be eligible for their fellowship stipend if their organization is put on hold due to time commitment conflicts with their studies.
* Applicants can be citizens of any nationality and their organizations can be based in any country. However, if the applicant is not a US citizen or permanent resident and does not have legal status to work in the US, no services in connection with their fellowship may be performed in the United States. If you are authorized to work in the US but this status is granted to you through your current employer and you are only authorized to work for that employer, you are not eligible to apply for a US-based proposal.
* Applicants must commit to attending Echoing Green’s training conferences, if selected as fellows. All new fellows attend a conference in July the year they are selected, as well as a November conference that year and for the next three years. Echoing Green covers all expenses related to these events and will announce the dates a few months prior to each conference.

The following proposals are not eligible for consideration for an Echoing Green Fellowship:

* Plans for the expansion of an existing organization that is past its start-up phase
* Plans for research projects
* Plans for lobbying activities
* Plans for faith-based initiatives (in this context, faith-based implies that you are associated with a religious institution or are promoting a specific faith; if your work has a spiritual basis but is not tied to any specific religion or faith, you may be eligible for consideration)
* Recipients of prior Echoing Green funding

Will you be a competitive candidate?

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria during the course of the selection process:

Applicant is an emerging social entrepreneur:

* Demonstrated entrepreneurial characteristics
* Demonstrated leadership potential
* Strong passion and commitment for the program area in which they plan to work
* Intelligence and problem solving skills
* Practical skills (e.g., strategic, organizational)
* Personal integrity

Applicant’s plan will result in a sustainable organization:

* Clear and compelling mission and objectives
* Sound strategy and plan for program development and delivery
* Plan for evaluating success and performance
* Plan for financial sustainability and growth
* Existing support network

Applicant can clearly articulate their vision for social change:

* Seriousness of the social problem they will address
* Innovative idea and approach
* Potential for tangible impact to the beneficiary population
* Potential for replication and growth
* Potential for effecting systemic change (e.g., policy change, societal change, influence in their field)

The identification and sharing of good practices helps service providers to improve their performance and ultimately provide enhanced services for persons with disabilities. The Disability Monitor Initiative (DMI-ME) is conducting a Good Practice Awards program to recognize good practices in service delivery.

Who can apply:

  • Service providers in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine and Yemen working in the areas of healthcare, education, livelihood opportunities and social protection – for persons with disabilities
  • Service providers with no more than 40 salaried staff or an annual budget less than $300,000

What is the process:

3. Applications can be submitted until Saturday 18 October 2008
4. The finalists from the region will be shortlisted and notified to arrange a face-to-face meeting to allow gathering of more in-depth information about the good practice
5. Face-to-face meetings will occur during October, November and December 2008, with the final winners notified shortly after all the assessments are completed

What is the prize:
For shortlisted service providers

  • their organization will be listed in the DMI-ME report themed around access to services for persons with disabilities in the Middle East due out in mid 2009
  • will receive a free flight and accommodation for a member of the organization to attend a major Regional Disability Conference for the Middle East scheduled to take place in mid 2009

  • in addition to the above prizes, the organization will ultimately receive €1,500

Action on Disability and Development (ADD) is an international development agency working with organisations of disabled people in their struggle for the rightful inclusion of disabled adults and children in society. Established in 1985, ADD operates internationally with partner organisations of disabled people to create a world where all disabled people are enabled to enjoy their rights, fulfil their responsibilities and participate as fully as they can and choose at every level of society.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of disabled people. We want to appoint a disabled person to lead ADD into the next phase of its development. Micro-Documentary Film Contest: Social Dimensions of Climate Change

As a follow-up to our landmark March 2008 International Workshop on the Social Dimensions of Climate Change, the World Bank?s Social Development Department is thrilled to announce the launch of a world-wide documentary competition, “Vulnerability Exposed: Social Dimensions of
Climate Change”. The aim of this film contest is to inspire people to innovatively illustrate the consequences of climate change through one of the following theme categories: conflict, migration, urban space, rural institutions, drylands, social policy, indigenous peoples, gender,
governance, forests and/or human rights.

The contest is open to anyone who wishes to have their voice heard – both amateur and professional filmmakers alike. There are two award categories: 1.) Social Dimensions of Climate Change Award (general category) and 2.) Young Voices of Climate Change Award (youth category).

The general category is open to everyone; the youth category is open to entries submitted by filmmakers who are under 24 years old. Award winners will be chosen through a combination of public voting and a judging panel. The film with the most public votes in each theme category will receive honorable mention. The Award Winners will receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington, DC for a screening of their film and will have the opportunity to attend a series of networking and learning events organized by the Social Development Department of the
World Bank in December, 2008.

The submission period ends on Friday, October 24, 2008.

Training Workshop on AIDS and Disability, 19-20 November 2008, Soesterberg, The Netherlands

The number of disabled people worldwide is considerable – the figure of 650 million is often quoted. People with a disability and their families also account for 20% of the world’s poorest people. But so far most HIV-AIDS programmes are not accessible to people with disabilities.
International attention to the rights of people with disabilities is increasing especially since May 2008, when the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities has come into effect. However governments and policy makers have generally yet to include disability issues in their AIDS strategic plans. Even within specific disability programmes it is not yet common to ensure that clients of such programmes do have access to appropriate information and services that are related to HIV-AIDS and reproductive health. Leaving disabled people out of HIV-AIDS prevention and care is shortsighted. Given the rapid growth of the epidemic and the size of the global disabled population (an estimated 10% of the world‘s citizens); the AIDS crisis cannot be addressed successfully unless individuals with disability are routinely included in all HIV-AIDS prevention, treatment and outreach efforts!

Local Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) teams, professionals, people with disabilities and their families share the same fears, misconceptions and risks as the rest of the general public with regard to the virus. They urgently need to receive accessible and appropriate information on HIV-AIDS. The launch of the new United Nations CBR Guidelines December 2008 in Bangkok will mean that information on HIV-AIDS will become more easily available for CBR teams as these guidelines pay specific attention to this subject. The goal of the section focusing on HIV-AIDS is to ensure ‘access for all’ to HIV-AIDS information, services and programmes. This goal involves three key areas: increasing individual knowledge, reducing stigma and discrimination and mitigating the impact HIV-AIDS has on families and communities.

During this 2-day workshop outstanding researchers and practitioners will ensure that participants will become sensitized towards the need for inclusion of disabled people within their mainstream HIV-AIDS programmes. They will also discuss strategies, tools and experiences in HIV/AIDS programmes that include disabled people and in CBR and disability programmes which integrate HIV-AIDS with their other activities.

• policy makers & planners as well as project staff working in the field of
development cooperation
• policy makers & planners as well as project staff of mainstream HIV¬AIDS organisations
• AIDS activists
• interested academic staff from various university faculties

Overall goal
Mainstream development and HIV¬AIDS organisations understand the importance of inclusion of disabled people in their HIV-AIDS programmes.

Objectives
Participants have an increased awareness about the vulnerability of persons with disabilities to the risk and impact of HIV and AIDS;
Participants have tools and arguments for how to ensure inclusion of disability in HIV-AIDS policies, strategies and programs; Participants are able to advocate within their own organizations for equal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for persons with disabilities.

Lecturing staff Dr. Nora Groce (USA) is a medical anthropologist, interested in the area of global health and international development with particular emphasis on cross-cultural systems of health care and health as human rights issues. Her research interests include issues of disability in international health and development, violence as a global public health problem and equity in access to health care in ethnic and minority communities. Current Research Projects of Nora Groce are:
• Disability and HIV/AIDS knowledge among Disabled Populations (and the Yale University/World Bank Global Survey on HIV/AIDS and Disability);
• World Bank Health Systems Assessment Project;
• Violence against Disabled Children; and
• HIV/AIDS Education in Indigenous Communities: Rites of Passage

George O. Obuya (Kenya) is project co-coordinator of the Deaf Social Counselling & HIV/AIDS Education Program. He is representing the Dar-es Salaam (Tanzania) based and recently formed African Deaf Union in the African Decade for Persons with Disability HIV/AIDS Steering Committee, as well as a senior board member of the Kenya National Association of the Deaf (KNAD).

Jessica de Ruijter is the advocacy officer at VSO Netherlands. She has much experience in the area of HIV prevention and started advocacy on HIV and disability since January 2008. She is also the co-chair of the DCDD working group HIV and Disability.

Dr Peter Rule is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Adult Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. He recently completed a three-country study for the World Bank on HIV & AIDS and Disability. He has experience of working with NGOs in KwaZulu-Natal in the fields of adult literacy, disability, gender, HIV/AIDS and early childhood development.

Geert Vanneste is a health and rehabilitation consultant who worked for Christoffel BlindenMission (CBM) in Rwanda (1987-1994) and Tanzania (1994-2007). His main expertise is in the area of CBR but increasingly he became involved in Health and Hospital Management and HIV-AIDS issues. Currently he is Independent Consultant and living in Belgium.

The workshop will be conducted under the leadership of Roelie Wolting and Huib Cornielje and supported by the HIV-AIDS working group of the Dutch Coalition on Disability and Development.

    The Tusaidiane Disabilities Resources and Charity Organization of Tanzania (TDRCT) would like to improve computer literacy and self-employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Mwanza, Tanzania, and promote their empowerment.

    This organization is run by people who themselves have disabilities. I have known the man who founded this organization for some years. If his organization can quickly raise $5000 from 40 donors within a few days, then GlobalGiving will feature their organization on its website.
