January 6, 2011 – Signing and singing with passion in Arabic, Spanish and English, 54 disabled women activists from 43 countries celebrate the achievements, pride and solidarity of women with disabilities around the world. These leaders are revolutionizing the status of women and girls worldwide. Filmed during MIUSA’s 5th International Women’s Institute on Leadership and Disability (WILD), the Loud, Proud and Passionate!(SM)  music video release marks the beginning of MIUSA’s 30th Anniversary year-long celebration.

It is with much pleasure and enthusiasm that I [Simon Guteng] announce our summer 2009 international leadership training program titled “Grassroots Advocacy Leadership Training for International Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals”, June 28-July 5, 2009.

Committed to improving the quality of personal and professional lives of deaf and hard of hearing individuals, the Gallaudet Leadership Institute and Professional Studies (GLIPS), a unit of the College of Professional Studies and Outreach at Gallaudet University, in collaboration with the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) ensures and assures the following program experiences and outcomes for participants:

1. Thorough understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)

2. Preparation for working at national level leadership positions

3. Skills to organize grassroots level deaf people into dynamic and productive groups

4. Hands-on training in strategic planning and goal setting

5. Knowledge of leadership styles and identification of one’s own strengths

6. Improvement in human relations skills

7. Enhanced knowledge about emotional intelligence and its uses

8. Certificate of attendance and participation

Participation cost per participant is $910. This cost covers program/registration fee, room, and meal.
It DOES NOT include or cover your airfare, ground transportation within and outside of United States, emergency medical/travel insurance, and pocket money.

The World Federation of Deaf (WFD) will dispatch an announcement letter on the leadership training to all National Associations of the Deaf around the world through their Headquarters. International Leadership Forum Announcement – Call for Applications

[Note to We Can Do readers: This opportunity is not targeted at disability advocates, but young leaders with an interest in disability-related advocacy may wish to read the criteria below and consider whether their interests may usefully intersect.]

The UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the fifth annual International Leadership Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum, to be held August 1 – 9, 2009 in Storrs, Connecticut, USA. Applications must be received by February 27, 2009.

The Forum seeks to empower young leaders by involving them in finding solutions to emerging human rights problems, and nurturing individuals to be effective leaders in the field of human rights.

To this end, the Forum will:

• Introduce participants to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
• Build a network of solidarity among human rights leaders
• Expand the knowledge relevant to human rights practice
• Provide tools and a platform for open debates
• Provide programmes, activities and processes necessary for human rights leadership
• Promote the sharing of experiences and understanding
• Showcase speakers on such topics as: health and human rights, education, the environment, the plight of child soldiers, the use of media, fundraising, conflict resolution and transformation; litigation and advocacy

The UNESCO Chair will provide all conference participants with dormitory housing, meals, ground transportation in Connecticut, resource materials and a certificate of participation.

Young people between the ages of 18-30, with community service experience, and with demonstrated ability to work on solutions to human rights problems, should apply. Relevant issues include, but are not limited to, human trafficking, the plight of children, refugees, hunger, HIV/AIDs, gender discrimination, racism, classism, the environment and peace education.

Conference will be held in English only. Fluency in English is required. Applicants will be selected based on the strength of their application essay, demonstrated commitment to human rights (practical/hands-on experience), potential impact on the individual and their potential contribution to the Forum, regional and gender representation.

MIUSA is currently accepting applications from professionals with disabilities from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Guatemala for MIUSA’s International Leadership, Employment, and Disability (I-LEAD) Professional exchange program in Eugene, Oregon USA, March 15 – April 5, 2009.

MIUSA strongly encourages professionals with all types of disabilities to apply, including people who have hearing, visual, psychiatric, learning and health related disabilities.

Applications and two references are due by January 16, 2009. However, late applications will be accepted.

The 2009 I-LEAD Professional exchange program will bring together influential leaders in government, business, education, community development, and disability rights organizations who demonstrate the capacity and commitment to expand employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Latin America.

Spanish-English translation and American Sign Language interpretation will be provided during formal program activities.

QUIÉN PUEDE PRESENTAR SU SOLICITUD:
Mujeres y hombres con y sin discapacidad provenientes de Argentina, Brasil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala y México.

MIUSA seleccionará individuos que demuestren capacidad y compromiso en la realización de cambios que expandan las oportunidades de empleo para las personas con discapacidad a nivel local o regional o a nivel nacional. Por ejemplo:

• Líderes de coaliciones de Organizaciones de Personas con Discapacidad (OPDs), a nivel municipal o nacional, u OPDs que incluyan diversas discapacidades que sean influyentes.

• Líderes del gobierno, incluyendo alcaldes o ministros u otros funcionarios clave en agencias de Servicios Sociales, Ministerios de Educación o Transporte, u otros.

• Educadores influyentes, tales como directores de escuelas, programas vocacionales, o universidades.

• Empresarios líderes que empleen o faciliten capacitación a personas con discapacidad, o que estén interesados en expandir su inclusión de personas con discapacidad como parte de su fuerza laboral.

• Profesionales y líderes de organizaciones comunitarias que promuevan la microempresa y el empleo, incluyendo adiestradores empresariales, formadores vocacionales, micro-prestamistas.

LENGUAJE:
Los lenguajes oficiales de I-LEAD Profesional son el español, el inglés y el lenguaje de señas estadounidense.

Se facilitará traducción español-inglés e interpretación en lenguaje de señas únicamente durante los talleres formales del programa, los seminarios y las visitas a instalaciones.

• Planificación profesional y educación superior incluyendo políticas y sistemas de apoyo para personas con discapacidad.
• Transporte y comunidades accesibles: políticas y modelos de sistemas de transporte accesibles y acceso público.
• Asociaciones entre microempresa y sector privado.
• Estrategias de liderazgo para empleo, incluyendo formulación de proyectos, uso de medios de comunicación, generación de coaliciones.
• Experiencias multiculturales y de formación de grupos de trabajo.
• Metas y planes de acción para el empleo de las mujeres y los hombres con discapacidad.
ALOJAMIENTO Y TRANSPORTE:
• Se proveerá alojamiento simple pero cómodo con habitaciones y baños compartidos.
• Se ofrecerán el desayuno, el almuerzo y una cena ligera al día. Todas las comidas adicionales, aperitivos, o gastos varios (incluyendo lavandería) serán responsabilidad de cada delegado.
• Se proveerá transporte público accesible.

COSTO DEL PROGRAMA:
• El costo total del programa es USD $250. Es posible que hayan becas limitadas en base a la necesidad que haya demostrado el solicitante.

TRAINING: International Deaf Youth Leadership Camp

Asia-Pacific Deaf Youth Leadership Camp will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 22nd – 27th June 2008 and run by the Indonesian Association for the welfare of the Deaf Youth.

[Edited March 6 ’08: This announcement originally indicated that this was called the World Federation of the Deaf Youth Leadership Camp. However, it has been brought to my attention that this is not officially designated as a WFD camp, though WFD is aware of it. Rather, it seems to be primarily for the Asian-Pacific region. Interested individuals should contact Donny to inquire for further detail and clarification. Further corrections or clarifications will be made to this post if and when I receive them. Apologies for any inconvenience.]

The theme of the camp is “WE ARE ONE”.

The youth camp is aimed at identifying ways to advocate for Deaf people’s human rights and will involve training in leadership and organizational activities; stimulate networking so that Deaf people interchange rewarding experiences, access to communication and information. The camp will also provide an opportunity to Deaf youths around the world to participate in a gathering at international level and to gain experiences and exposure. Because the host country is still developing, it is very hard to offer financial support.

Registration ends on 15th April 2008.

Delegates from the Asia Pacific region pay a registration fee of 250 US Dollars while those from other countries pay a total of 300 US dolars. The registration fee includes meals and accomodation. The delegates are expected to meet their flight costs (air tickets) to and from Indonesia. The age limit is 17 – 35 years. Email Donny for further information.

TRAINING for Women with Disabilities in South Asia

REGIONAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES

OBJECTIVE
The initial ‘master’ training will facilitate a group of 25 Women with Disabilities (WWD) from the South Asia region including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Maldives in leadership & advocacy skills within a rights based framework. Those attending will in turn be supported to organize and run national level leadership and advocacy trainings when they return home. They will also develop country strategic advocacy plans, and be offered small seed grants to enable the implementation.

The participants will engage in a 7 day training process which will enable them to:

  • Share their country level situations
  • Deepen their understanding of a rights based approach to issues affecting WWD
  • Design & plan their adapted leadership and advocacy training at national level based on the initial ‘master’ training
  • Form a regional network of WWDs
  • Design & plan national advocacy and communication strategies for the rights of WWDs
  • Develop WWD leadership training modules including a resource base of materials

PARTICIPANTS (Criteria for selection):
The training is open to WWDs and organizations, who will be able to carry out the national level trainings in their respective countries after this initial workshop. They should be well networked and able to mobilize people and resources. They will need some experience of leadership and an ability to motivate others. A working knowledge of English is required, as is the ability to organize and host training events.

Priority will be given to WWD themselves and organizations working to further the rights of WWD

CONTENT OF TRAINING:

Regional Leadership Training: (TOT): 7 days.

  2. Leadership
    • Meaning, Necessity

  3. Communication – Advocacy – Lobbying
    • Meaning/Importance/Necessity
    • Good / effective communication
    • Communication tools
    • Development of Advocacy frameworks
    • Advocacy & lobbying – what, why & how
  4. Social Mobilisation
    • Understanding rights, including human rights, rights of women, rights of disabled
    • Significance of human rights instruments (national & international) – CEDAW, UNCRPD, BMF etc.
    • Use and limitations of these instruments
    • Social mobilization to achieve rights
    • Analysis of legislation and policies
  5. Group Mobilisation
    • Meaning/Importance/Necessity
    • Organizing people in groups
    • Mobilizing and managing groups
    • Strengthening group dynamics
    • Setting targets for group
  6. Networking
    • Why? The benefits and challenges
    • Making it effective & sustainable
    • Setting vision and target activities
  7. Planning & designing training

TRAINING STYLE
The training will be highly participatory, drawing on the experience of the participants to develop and improve our collective knowledge base. Trainers will be from a variety of backgrounds and specialisms including advocacy expertise, network strengthening, media, project planning and management and leadership skills development.

COSTS
25 places will be fully supported including travel, food, accommodation and a small allowance.

A selection committee comprising members from the four lead organizations will assess each application. Please remember that after the initial ‘master’ training, there will be national level trainings in each of the countries in the region so there will be further opportunities to engage at national level.

This workshop is part of the ‘Creating Spaces – for women with disabilities (WWD) to communicate and advocate for their rights’ project – a collaborative initiative from Association of Women with Disabilities (AWWD) – India, Association for Women with Disabilities (Akasa), Sri Lanka, Social Assistance for the Rehabilitation of the Physically Vulnerable (SARPV) Bangladesh and Healthlink Worldwide, UK

    The Tusaidiane Disabilities Resources and Charity Organization of Tanzania (TDRCT) would like to improve computer literacy and self-employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Mwanza, Tanzania, and promote their empowerment.

    This organization is run by people who themselves have disabilities. I have known the man who founded this organization for some years. If his organization can quickly raise $5000 from 40 donors within a few days, then GlobalGiving will feature their organization on its website. This will enable them to attract more prospective funders. I have made a donation to them, I hope others will consider doing the same.
