GLOBAL: Small grants programme for deaf children

Since 2002, Deaf Child Worldwide has supported organisations working to help deaf children overcome the barriers that contribute to their poverty and isolation.

Round 8 of Deaf Child Worldwide’s Small Grants Programme (SGP) opens on 19 March 2009 and ends 30 May 2009.

The SGP supports projects which show clear, measurable and sustainable improvements to the lives of deaf children and their families in developing countries.

Deaf Child Worldwide fund projects of up to three years and for a maximum amount of £30,000 (£10,000 per year). Visit the website for information on the SGP and the application process.

Successful projects must meet one or more of Deaf Child Worldwide’s strategic aims. Applicants must consider our cross-cutting themes in the development of their proposal.

Deaf Child Worldwide is focusing its activities in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania), South Asia (Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka) and Latin America (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru). You must be based in one of these countries to apply to SGP.

Applications are only accepted in ‘concept note’ format in English or Spanish. The deadline for submission of concept notes to Deaf Child Worldwide is 30 May 2009. Selected projects will start in January 2010.

MIUSA is currently accepting applications from professionals with disabilities from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Guatemala for MIUSA’s International Leadership, Employment, and Disability (I-LEAD) Professional exchange program in Eugene, Oregon USA, March 15 – April 5, 2009.

MIUSA strongly encourages professionals with all types of disabilities to apply, including people who have hearing, visual, psychiatric, learning and health related disabilities.

Applications and two references are due by January 16, 2009. However, late applications will be accepted.

The 2009 I-LEAD Professional exchange program will bring together influential leaders in government, business, education, community development, and disability rights organizations who demonstrate the capacity and commitment to expand employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Latin America.

Spanish-English translation and American Sign Language interpretation will be provided during formal program activities.

Partial scholarships are available for this program.

Diciembre 10, 2008 — Mobility International USA (MIUSA) se encuentra aceptando solicitudes de profesionales con discapacidad de Argentina, Brasil, Costa Rica, y Guatemala para el Programa de Intercambio Profesional de MIUSA sobre Liderazgo Internacional, Empleo y Discapacidad (I-LEAD por sus siglas en inglés) en Eugene, Oregón, EE.UU., del 15 de marzo al 5 de abril, 2009.

MIUSA alienta a los profesionales con todo tipo de discapacidad a presentar su solicitud, incluyendo personas con discapacidad auditiva, visual, psiquiátrica, de aprendizaje y relacionada con la salud.

Como resultado del programa, los líderes desarrollarán estrategias prácticas y crearan planes de acción conjuntos para impulsar sus esfuerzos y compromiso por incrementar las oportunidades de empleo para las personas con discapacidad a nivel local, nacional, y/o regional.

Únicamente las actividades formales del programa contarán con traducción español-inglés y al lenguaje de señas estadounidense. Se facilitará materiales en formatos alternativos y podrán negociarse otras adecuaciones de accesibilidad que aseguren una completa participación.

MIUSA, una organización sin fines de lucro, se dedica a empoderar a las personas con discapacidad alrededor del mundo a alcanzar sus derechos humanos mediante los intercambios internacionales y el desarrollo internacional. En el programa de Intercambio I-LEAD Profesional de MIUSA, tanto mujeres como hombres con y sin discapacidad de seis distintos países de América Latina que son líderes en el gobierno, en empresas, en el sector educativo, y en organizaciones de desarrollo comunitario y de defensa de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad, edificarán redes de contactos, desarrollarán estrategias prácticas, y generarán planes de acción conjuntos que incrementen las oportunidades de empleo para las personas con discapacidad en América Latina.

QUIÉN PUEDE PRESENTAR SU SOLICITUD:
Mujeres y hombres con y sin discapacidad provenientes de Argentina, Brasil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala y México.

MIUSA seleccionará individuos que demuestren capacidad y compromiso en la realización de cambios que expandan las oportunidades de empleo para las personas con discapacidad a nivel local o regional o a nivel nacional. Por ejemplo:

• Líderes de coaliciones de Organizaciones de Personas con Discapacidad (OPDs), a nivel municipal o nacional, u OPDs que incluyan diversas discapacidades que sean influyentes.

• Líderes del gobierno, incluyendo alcaldes o ministros u otros funcionarios clave en agencias de Servicios Sociales, Ministerios de Educación o Transporte, u otros.

• Educadores influyentes, tales como directores de escuelas, programas vocacionales, o universidades.

• Empresarios líderes que empleen o faciliten capacitación a personas con discapacidad, o que estén interesados en expandir su inclusión de personas con discapacidad como parte de su fuerza laboral.

• Profesionales y líderes de organizaciones comunitarias que promuevan la microempresa y el empleo, incluyendo adiestradores empresariales, formadores vocacionales, micro-prestamistas.

LENGUAJE:
Los lenguajes oficiales de I-LEAD Profesional son el español, el inglés y el lenguaje de señas estadounidense.

Se facilitará traducción español-inglés e interpretación en lenguaje de señas únicamente durante los talleres formales del programa, los seminarios y las visitas a instalaciones.

DETALLES GENERALES DEL PROGRAMA:
El programa I-LEAD incluirá talleres, visitas a instalaciones y actividades prácticas sobre temas que incluyan:

• Estrategias de empleo para mujeres y hombres con discapacidad incluyendo educación, capacitación, empleo asistido, rehabilitación vocacional.
• Políticas y legislación para oportunidades de trabajo.
• Oportunidades igualitarias en la educación, incluyendo escuelas inclusivas y escuelas específicas para discapacidad, legislación y servicios y adecuaciones de accesibilidad.
• Planificación profesional y educación superior incluyendo políticas y sistemas de apoyo para personas con discapacidad.
• Transporte y comunidades accesibles: políticas y modelos de sistemas de transporte accesibles y acceso público.
• Asociaciones entre microempresa y sector privado.
• Estrategias de liderazgo para empleo, incluyendo formulación de proyectos, uso de medios de comunicación, generación de coaliciones.
• Experiencias multiculturales y de formación de grupos de trabajo.
• Metas y planes de acción para el empleo de las mujeres y los hombres con discapacidad.
ALOJAMIENTO Y TRANSPORTE:
• Se proveerá alojamiento simple pero cómodo con habitaciones y baños compartidos.
• Se ofrecerán el desayuno, el almuerzo y una cena ligera al día. Todas las comidas adicionales, aperitivos, o gastos varios (incluyendo lavandería) serán responsabilidad de cada delegado.
• Se proveerá transporte público accesible.

COSTO DEL PROGRAMA:
• El costo total del programa es USD $250. Es posible que hayan becas limitadas en base a la necesidad que haya demostrado el solicitante.

• MIUSA proporcionará: los boletos de avión ida y vuelta para que los participantes viajen desde sus países hasta Eugene, Oregón, EEUU; comida, alojamiento y transporte local para todas las actividades del programa I-LEAD Profesional.

Introduction
People with disability have often been and remained excluded from HIV prevention as well as AIDS care efforts as a result of an aggregation of various taboos and coordination miss opportunities. On one hand, it is often presumed that people with disability are not sexually active and at no risk of infection. Simultaneously, the fact that they have less access to education and social opportunities prevents them from being in touch with preventive information and resources. On the other hand, the organizations of people with disability are generally unknown and themselves unaware of the health and prevention policy making and programming opportunities.

The result of all this is that the exposure of men and women with disabilities to the main risk factors of HIV-AIDS are higher compared to non-disabled population. At the same time, while people living with AIDS have a higher survival rate due to medical advances, a frequent consequence is that there are an increasing number of disabilities (mainly physical and sensorial limitations) secondary to the disease itself or its pharmacologic treatment, indicating emerging needs and services to respond and coordinate.

Over the past two years, sponsored by the World Bank, the Inter-American Institute on Disability and Inclusive Development (IIDI), in collaboration with several international organizations working in the HIV-AIDS and Disability areas has organized two Technical Meetings (Chile 2006 and Argentina 2007) on STDs, HIV-AIDS and Disability. The main purpose of these meetings has been to facilitate knowledge shearing amongst specialists and encourage policy development to address the increasing interrelation amongst AIDS and Disability.

The main axes of this work have been on

a. Documenting the interface between aids and disability and compiling evidence of emerging needs and responses

b. Identifying opportunities for active collaboration between organizations working in the AIDS and the inclusion fields, to optimise use of existing resources and promote inter-institutional approaches to inclusive aids prevention and rehabilitation services delivery to people living with AIDS.

In 2008, with the support of CONAPRED (in Spanish Consejo Nacional para Prevenir la Discriminación, México), the World Bank and PAHO-WHO the 3rd Technical Meeting will be held in Mexico, on August 1-2, to coincide with the AIDS International Conference (August 3-8, 2008). It will continue working on recommendations for crosscutting and inclusive approaches HIV-AIDS Prevention and Care.

Objectives
The 3rd Experts Meeting on STDs, HIV-AIDS and Disability, seeks to advance the discussion on “Evidence-based Research on the inter connections between AIDS and Disability” and on “Care for people living with AIDS and Disabilities: effective approaches and services”.

Expected Outcomes
The expected outcomes of the meeting are:

o Review of new developments in LAC National AIDS Programs;
o Update bibliographical and research review on the topic;
o Review of new materials and initiatives of international agencies, Civil Society and Academia;
o Review of new content and tools for the LAC HIV-AIDS site on the issue;
o Development of a new set of recommendations for a cross-cutting and inclusive approaches in the area of STD, HIV-AIDS Prevention and Care, with special focus in “Monitoring & Evaluation and Evidence-based Research and on Care Attention for people living with AIDS and Disabilities, as a consequence of the treatment;
o Establishment of a LAC Permanent Working Group, with interagency involvement, south-to-south knowledge sharing and a joint research and implementation agenda;

Disability Rights Fund Opens Grantmaking to DPOs in 7 Countries

BOSTON, MA – The Disability Rights Fund—a groundbreaking grantmaking collaborative supporting the human rights of people with disabilities—today announced its first grants competition.

The broad objective of the Fund — which was launched by the Open Society Institute, The Sigrid Rausing Trust, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, and an anonymous donor on the first anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) — is to empower disabled persons organizations in the developing world and Eastern Europe/former Soviet Union to effectively implement and monitor the CPRD.

In 2008, the Fund plans to give out a total of USD $700,000 in one-year grants ranging from USD $5000 – $50,000 and aimed at awareness-raising, strengthening coalitions and networks, and rights advocacy.

To be eligible for this year’s grants program, applicant organizations must be based in and conduct the majority of their activities in the following seven countries: in Africa, Ghana, Namibia and Uganda; in Latin America, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Peru; in Asia, Bangladesh. In these countries, the Fund will support Disabled Persons’ Organizations activities that advance the human rights of persons with disabilities at country-level.

Interested organizations are urged to review the full eligibility criteria and application details posted at the Fund’s website, www.disabilityrightsfund.org. Any questions on the proposal process should be directed to info@disabilityrightsfund.org by July 15. The deadline for applications is August 15.

EENET Recruiting Steering Group Members to Promote Inclusive Education

EENET steering group: user group representatives

Background to EENET’s Steering Group
The Enabling Education Network (EENET) is a global information network that helps education practitioners and stakeholders to document and share their experiences of inclusive, child-friendly education. The network prioritises the information needs of southern countries. It aims to reach those who are often excluded from other international information systems or debates, or who cannot afford to buy information resources. EENET’s users include local and international Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), teachers, parents, students, government officials, academics, etc.

EENET has a very small co-ordination office in the UK, employing one staff member and a few volunteers, but still manages to support the information needs of thousands of people in 200 countries. Independent regional networks, based on EENET’s vision and mission, are also being developed in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

EENET’s role is to champion inclusive education. But it also seeks to challenge the status quo, to ask difficult questions and encourage debates on controversial topics. To ensure that EENET fulfils this role, and continues to meet the information needs of its diverse target audience, the network has a Steering Group which has not been very active for several years, but is now being reformed.

EENET Steering Group function and role of members

  • The Steering Group will monitor EENET’s activities and makes suggestions for changes.
  • Steering Group members will represent the views of EENET’s founders, its regional networking partners, international NGOs/donors, and, very importantly, its target users.
  • Steering Group members will assist EENET staff with taking action in key areas of EENET’s development (e.g. fundraising) if they have skills and experience in a relevant area.

User group representatives
Two or three Steering Group representatives will be appointed from among EENET’s ‘grassroots’ users. While they will not be able to represent the full diversity of EENET’s users, they will bring to the Steering Group a valuable ‘reality check’ on the needs, challenges and potential contributions of EENET’s users.

These ‘grassroots’ Steering Group representatives will be selected based on the following criteria:

Essential

  • Good communication skills, preferably in English.
  • Able to communicate by email, and also if possible by telephone or using internet phone or chat systems.
  • Able to travel to the UK and other countries (e.g. must have a passport, or be able to obtain a passport and travel visas without difficulties).
  • Enthusiasm about the aims, values and principles of EENET, and a commitment to contributing as fully as possible to the Steering Group.

One or more of the following are desired:

    Awareness of:
  • child rights
  • education issues
  • disability and/or other diversity issues
  • community development issues.
  • First hand experience of inclusive education (as a student, teacher, parent, local education official, teacher trainer, etc).
  • Experience of being an activist or in other ways representing a marginlised, discriminated against or excluded group (e.g. women/girls; disabled people; refugees; working children, etc).
  • Awareness of EENET and/or an active member of EENET’s network.
  • Awareness of and/or an active member of other south-based, south-focused information sharing and advocacy networks.
  • Financial issues
    Steering Group members are unpaid volunteers. There is no salary for being a Steering Group member. However, EENET will cover all costs relating to attending meetings (e.g. travel, accommodation, meals and other essential daily living expenses) and participating in telephone conferences or internet chats.

    International Service, a development agency that works in Latin America, West Africa, and the Middle East, is seeking nominations for its annual International Service Human Rights Awards.

    We Can Do readers should please note that one of their categories is for grass roots activists or organizations working in the area of disability rights. This would be an opportunity for readers to help bring attention and recognition to a leader in the disability rights advocacy field who you have long admired. Rosangela Berman-Bieler was recognized in 2007.

    International Service Human Rights Awards

    Introduction and Guidelines
    The International Service Human Rights Awards recognise grassroots organisations, international development workers and activists who work for change at a local, national or international level.

    The Awards aim to honour organisations and individuals that work at the very grassroots level in promoting human rights and effecting real change in the lives of people. They seek to celebrate the work of the ‘unsung heroes’ in the struggle for human rights. These Awards are meant to complement rather than compete with other awards honouring people who promote social, economic and political change around the world.

    The Awards have four objectives:

    1. To affirm the importance of the work which is aimed at changing the things that cause people in society to be excluded, impoverished or disempowered.
    2. To promote the importance of doing this work in a way which demonstrates an attitude of fundamental respect for all people, but especially for those who suffer from poverty and injustice.
    3. To raise the profile of the individual or organisational achievement via press coverage in the UK and in the country in which the organisation or individual is based.
    4. To complement existing higher profile awards in recognising grassroots work.

    Eligibility criteria
    Nominees must be individuals or organisations (including local partner organisations and international NGOs) working in development in any county in the world. Nominees can be nominated by international development agencies and human rights organisations. The activities referred to in the nomination must be activities which are currently underway or have recently been completed.

    Categories
    The Award for the Defence of the Human Rights of Women
    The prize will be given for activities that have worked to empower, protect or promote women’s rights.

    The Award for the Defence of the Human Rights of Children
    The prize will be given for activities that have worked to protect children’s rights through access to healthcare, education or positive recreation.

    The Award for the Defence of the Human Rights of Disabled People
    The prize will be given for activities that have worked to achieve equal opportunities for disabled people.

    The Award for the Defence of the Human Rights of People Living with HIV/AIDS
    The prize will be given for activities that have worked to stop the spread of HIV/Aids in any country or empowered those who have already contracted the disease.

    The Global Human Rights Defender
    The prize will be given in recognition of someone who uses their influence or celebrity to campaign for human rights for all. International Service believes that grassroots work can also be promoted by individuals or organisations that use their influence or celebrity to raise the profile of the struggle for universal human rights.

    Thursday 3rd July 2008

    Our panel of judges will meet to assess the nominations and agree upon a winner in each category. The judges’ decisions will be advertised in the International Service Human Rights Awards website (www.is-humanrightsawards.org) within a period of two months after the submission deadline. Winners will be contacted to inform them about the results. International Service will not contact unsuccessful entries, but enquiries can be made.

    Awards presentation
    The International Service Human Rights Awards presentation will take place on 8th December 2008 at the Terrace Marquee at the House of Commons.

    The judging panel
    The composition of the jury panel aims to include individuals from a wide range of backgrounds with interest in human rights. The 2008 panel is composed of people from the corporate, academic and development sectors.

    Round 7 of Deaf Child Worldwide’s Small Grants Programme is now open. The deadline for completed concept notes is 30 May 2008.

    The Small Grants Programme (SGP), aims to have an impact on the lives of deaf children, their families, service providers and policy makers by establishing quality partnerships with local organisations based in our priority countries within East Africa, South Asia or Latin America. We fund one to three year projects of up to £10,000 per year.

    If you applied to SGP in the past, then please note that in 2007, we carried out a strategic review and an evaluation of SGP. We have made some significant changes to the programme. These include:

    • Smaller geographic focus. Now only organisations based in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda), South Asia (Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka), and Andean region of Latin America (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru) can apply.
    • New strategic focus areas. We are only looking for projects which work towards these key areas.
    • Cross-cutting themes. All projects must consider poverty, gender, the social model of disability and sexual health and HIV/AIDS.
    • Longer projects. You can now apply for projects that are from one to three years long.

    RI was established in 1922, and is a well recognised and respected international disability and rehabilitation advocacy organisation. RI is a global cross-disability and cross-disciplinary NGO providing a unique meeting ground for participants in a field that has disciplinary and ideological opinions and differences. RI has well-established partnerships with the UN and its agencies as well as other international and regional organisations in the field of disability.     RI is a democratic organisation governed by an Assembly – representing RI member organisations in almost 100 countries. The RI Annual Assembly is a global forum to discuss developments in disability issues and general policies and programs of the organisation. The RI Executive Committee provides strategic direction, formulates and considers policies and oversees the budget of the organisation. The RI EC consists of 22 members composed of the RI President, President-elect or Past President, Treasurer and representatives of RI Regions and expert Commissions.

    RI is a matrix organisation, with regional leadership in Africa, the Arab Region, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America as well as thematic Commissions in particular fields of expertise, to assist in developing and expanding program activities in accordance with RI strategic goals. The RI Foundation was established in 2006 and provides the basis for significant growth and development of the RI agenda worldwide.

    RI and its members are involved in a range of advocacy projects and activities to promote the RI goal of advancing and achieving the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities worldwide. The next RI World Congress is scheduled in Quebec City, Canada during August 2008. RI also works toward increasing international collaboration and advocates for policies and legislation recognising the rights of people with disabilities and their families, including the ratification and implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

    RI is managed by a full time Secretariat in our New York City head office. The Secretary General is the CEO of the organisation and our current incumbent has successfully managed this role since 2001.

    We now require the services of a resourceful, experienced and dynamic candidate for the role of RI Secretary General. There will be a suitable and agreed transition period for the successful candidate.

    Responsibilities and Competencies of Secretary General
    The responsibilities and competencies of the successful applicant will include

    * Implementation of RI policies, strategies and programs as determined by the RI General Assembly and RI EC – and as agreed with, and in close consultation with, the President, Executive Committee and RI Foundation Board

    * Effective management and implementation of the RI Strategic Plan – with balanced commitment to RI Global activities and development of the RI Foundation

    * Demonstrate professionalism, judgement, technical awareness and leadership

    * Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to operate effectively across organisational boundaries – with ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds

    * Solicit input by genuinely valuing other peoples ideas and expertise – and willing to learn from others

    * Ability to operate in a changing environment with innovation and professionalism

    * Take the lead with respect to the preparation and implementation of the work program, ensuring that resources are utilised effectively and prudently to implement activities in accordance with the RI Mission, budget and available human and financial resources

    * Monitor and review the work program and budget by conducting regular analysis to assess progress of actual work versus the program

    * Define requirements and work with system units with respect to improving budget reporting systems and cost effective utilisation of program resources

    * Supervise and provide guidance on financial administration and management information issues and practices to Board members, in conjunction with the Finance Committee

    * Provide guidance and leadership to RI staff

    * Promote RI membership growth in conjunction with the Membership Committee

    * Oversee work related to billing and receipt of income from various services, monitoring and evaluation of individual contractors for services

    * Represent RI at international, regional and national meetings related to disability rights and related issues – including IDA, the International Disability Alliance

    * Collaborate with relevant organisations including United Nations, World Bank, DPOs, foundations, the private sector, NGOs and civil society at large

    * Participate in inter-agency consultations, meetings, and conferences related to disability rights and services issues

    * Organise and participate in expert group meetings, workshops and seminars on disability rights and services as required

    * Provide advisory services to and collaborate with UN agencies, governments, DPOs, NGOs, regional groups, private sector groups and other stakeholders on disability rights, services and related issues

    Qualifications

    Education – A minimum of first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience.

    Work Experience – A minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in change management, human resources and financial / budget operations, with relevant professional experience in international, governmental and non-governmental organisations.

    The RI Secretary General role calls for very good administrative, diplomacy and management skills. First hand disability related experience is preferred.

    Languages – Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency and / or working knowledge of other languages is desirable.

    Other Skills – Ability to use relevant computer technology and software.

    Remuneration
    A competitive compensation and benefits package is offered – subject to professional experience, family situation and other criteria as may be applicable. Immigration procedures can be negotiated as required.

    Selection Process
    Applicants will be short listed on the basis of academic credentials, experience, availability and other relevant factors. Additional information may be requested from candidates.

    Short listed applicants will be invited to come to New York or elsewhere as appropriate, for an interview with representatives of the RI Selection Committee. Candidates will be interviewed on various criteria including related knowledge, skills, abilities, personality and availability.

    The intention is for the new RI Secretary General to be appointed by June 2008.

    About the Conference

    This Latin American Regional Conference, co-organized by Rehabilitation International (RI), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (CONADIS) and the National System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF), aims to promote comprehensive and effective implementation of the Convention by strengthening dialogue and partnerships among the disability community, policymakers, lawyers and judges and by providing a forum for exchanging good practices and networking. The majority of the conference will be devoted to 90-minute discussions with small panels, to allow for the most interaction among more than 150 expected participants.

    This Conference is part of RI’s Global Advocacy Campaign, which focuses on raising awareness and building capacity to promote the Convention, and also fits in the activities being prepared by the Mexican Government to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

    In an innovative approach to mainstreaming disability rights, RI is partnering with the international law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and local law firms in the region to conduct an analysis of existing national laws in Mexico, Ecuador and Costa Rica vis-à-vis the UN Convention and develop recommendations for legal reform in each country. The research is being carried out in collaboration with disability experts and relevant actors in these countries and will be presented at the Conference as a resource for NGOs, government officials, parliamentarians and legal professionals in Latin America.

    In addition to the legal issues related to implementation, the participants will discuss the implementation gap in order to ensure that the UN Convention is translated into good policies and programs reaching all persons with disabilities; strategies for inclusion of persons with disabilities in decision-making bodies; and concrete measures for addressing the disability-poverty cycle.

    Simultaneous translation into Spanish and English will be provided. In addition, written materials will be available in accessible formats.

    CASE STUDY: Strengthening Disabled Women Organizations in Nicaragua

    A publication entitled “Learning from experience: strengthening organisations of women with disabilities” (PDF format, 1.3 Mb) shares lessons learned about organizing, personal empowerment, awareness raising, and incorporating a gender perspective. The publication focuses on work done by a Nicaraguan non-governmental organization (NGO), Solidez, that works to strengthen the capacity of local disabled women’s organizations and integrate women with disabilities into society. Solidez aims to help independent organizations improve their ability to manage their own decisions and self development.

    In particular, this profile about Solidez is meant to analyze the lessons they have learned in organizational work and projects, empowerment and personal growth, awareness raising, and advocacy. It describes some of the barriers that Solidez has encountered in its work, for example in overcoming negative, religion-based attitudes toward gender or disabilities. Solidez also explains some of the strategies they used and their results: for example, they attribute part of their success to the use of home visits and meetings in women’s homes. The publication offers frank discussion of some of the challenges Solidez has confronted, such as finding ways to support groups in resolving sometimes very emotional inter-personal conflicts. It concludes with recommendations for how Solidez could further improve upon its efforts.

    The publication is available from One World Action, an NGO based in the United Kingdom that works to create opportunities for the world’s poorest people.

    Mobility International USA (MIUSA) seeks women and men with disabilities from Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua,and Peru to apply for a 21-day leadership exchange program in March 2008, in Eugene, Oregon.

    The International Leadership, Employment and Disability (I-LEAD) program will focus on expanding opportunities for employment for people with disabilities in Latin America. We are seeking individuals with leadership experience and potential in these areas. All program activities will include Spanish translation, and substantial scholarships are available.

    FUNDING for Conference Participation from Developing Nations

    Every year there are dozens of international disability-related conferences. These conferences allow thousands of participants to network with colleagues around the world, forge partnerships across national and professional boundaries, and enrich their knowledge and understanding of the work they do with disabled people in their home countries.

    But every year, there are also thousands of people from developing countries who are cut off from these opportunities because most conferences do not take their financial limitations into account. Usually the easiest expense for conference organizers to control are the registration fees. But many do not even have discounted fees for participants from developing countries. Even those that do usually don’t, or cannot, help reduce the cost of travel or lodging. So where can would be conference-participants from developing countries turn for assistance?

    Although limited, a few options may be available to you depending on your country of origin, the location of the conference, the goals of the organization that you represent, or the purpose of your trip. Try exploring one of the following three organizations. (Note that the AJ Muste Memorial Institute and the Inter-American Foundation are primarily for people in the Latin American region. Only the Ford Foundation addresses the needs of people from all or most regions.).

    Please note that any requests or applications for funding should be directed to these three organizations, NOT to We Can Do.     Ford Foundation
    The Ford Foundation has 12 country offices in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Russia. The country offices have travel grant monies which may be usable for attending international conferences. Go to their contact us page to find and contact a regional office near you. Also try looking at their grants page for more information on applying for Ford Foundation grants in general.

    AJ Muste Memorial Institute
    The AJ Muste Memorial Institute has a number of different grants for projects that promote nonviolence means for achieving social justice, particularly in areas such as peace and disarmament; social and economic justice; racial and sexual equality; and labor rights.

    This includes the NOVA Travel Fund (in Spanish), which makes grants of up to $1,500 to help base-level activists from Latin America and the Caribbean attend regional conferences and meetings. Grant recommendations are made by a committee of advisors representing different regions of Latin America. Their next deadline is October 1, 2008 for trips that would begin after November 15, 2008–but check back at their web site for future deadlines.

    Inter-American Foundation (IAF)
    The IAF funds the self-help efforts of grassroots groups in Latin America and the Caribbean to improve living conditions of the disadvantaged and the excluded, enhance their capacity for decision-making and self-governance, and develop partnerships with the public sector, business and civil society. The IAF does not identify problems or suggest projects; instead it responds to initiatives presented. Projects are selected for funding on their merits rather than by sector. IMPORTANT: The IAF only supports projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.

    Grant requests need to come from organizations, not from individuals. The IAF has supported disability rights activists from Latin America in attending the Ad-Hoc Commitee meetings at the United Nations and also in attending meetings in Panama for the Latin America Decade.
