To Share and Build Understanding of a successful Approach which promotes the vital involvement of Persons with Disabilities in a Nation’s Development.

About the Seminar
In February 2008, Dhaka will host a seminar entitled “One for All-Persons with Disabilities Initiatives in Development’- a dynamic and interactive conference that will present and illuminate an innovative and successful program which promotes the vital involvement of persons with disabilities in a nation’s development. This approach – known as Persons with Disabilities’ self-initiative to Development (PSID)- has been implemented in Bangladesh by Bangladesh Protibandhi Kallyan Somity (BPKS) and has been many, many success in improving the lives of persons with disabilities and in developing a functional disabled people’s movement within the country. The 5 day International Seminar will introduce and increase understanding of the PSID approach, and create a venue for discussion and exploration of the possibilities that the approach offers the disability movement beyond the borders of Bangladesh.

About PSID
A holistic cross-disability approach, PSID creates opportunities for PWDs to design and use their own initiative in order to change not only their lives, but also to contribute to the overall development of the community. In order to ensure and maximize PWDs Development and participation, the PSID approach concentrates on: addressing PWDs primary needs, the formation of disabled peoples organisations and the necessary capacity building, education and intellectual Development of PWDs, skills and economic development, protection and promotion of human rights, creation of an accessible environemnt, disability prevention and health services promotion. The Approach facilitates the development of disabled peoples organisations from the grassroots to the national level. Organizations developed through PSID are owned and managed by disabled people and serve as the local focal point for PWDs and the disability movement, while extending their benefits to the general community and ultimately the nation.

Objectives of the seminar
To intorduce the Person’s with disabilities’ self-initiatives to Development (PSID) approach at the internaitonal level to strengthen donor agencies’ understanding of the importance of supporting Disabled People’s organisations (DPOs) in the development process to disseminate information regarding an effective method for formation and strengthening of self-help organisations of disabled peoples to Create an opportunity to view the PSID approach in action

To strengthen understanding of the relevance of the PSID approach in other countries
to establish an international network of people supportive of the PSID approach to establish the PSID approach as one which is able to effectively implement international disability and development standards and agreements
