NEWS: Afghan Disabled Union Now Named Development & Ability Organization (DAO)

Posted on 17 April 2008. Filed under: Announcements, News, South Asian Region | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

The following notice is being circulated by the newly-renamed Development & Ability Organization (DAO), formerly named the Afghan Disabled Union

Dear All:

Hope that you will be in good health.

The Afghan Disabled Union ADU has been renamed to Development & Ability Organization (DAO). This was done to ensure that we are no longer using negative words for persons with disabilities such as “Disabled”, which in English language can also mean “unable” and Mayoub/Mayoubin in Afghanistan’s national languages.

DAO will present a copy of our new registration certificate with the Ministry of Economy to the donors and the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled with an official letter explaining the change of our name from Afghan Disabled Union ADU to Development & Ability Organization DAO.

However please note that our official emails will remain the same as before until 25/4/2008 and then it will be changed to director@daoafghanistan.org, admin@daoafghanistan.org and info@daoafghanistan.org.

For further information on DAO please refer to our website www.daoafghanistan.org although it is now under construction. Please also forgive me for any duplicate posting.

Kind regards,

Omara Khan Muneeb
Director DAO which was
Formerly Afghan Disabled Union ADU.

Please contact me direct if there is any question with regard to DAO on my official email which is: director@daoafghanistan.org

This is a good step that DAO or the former ADU
has taken.

Kind regards,

Dear colleagues !

Hope that you will be in good health.

In Kunar province there is an orthopedic clinic providing physiotherapy, prosthetics, orthotics and assistive devices for persons with disabilities. Currently this clinic is run by Development and Ability Organization (DAO). We have been providing services to the people of Kunar, Nuristan as well as some nearby districts of Nangarhar for more than 2 and half years. Recently we have been informed by our donor (UNOPS) that funds would not be currently available. However they have mentioned that they will keep our organization in mind should more funding come up then will consider this centre for funding. DAO has actively been seeking funding but has not succeeded and fear that we will not find funds to continue our operations. For more information please refer the physical rehabilitation centre activity report for the last quarter which is attached to this email.

Kunar falls within the EU support provinces of the EPHS. The DAO clinic provides services to over 930 people per year and the numbers are increasing as the services become known. It is the opinion of the DRD that these services are vital to the three provinces noted above and that the loss of these services will have a great impact of the health and well being of persons with disabilities but also for those persons with back and neck injury who benefit from rehabilitation services and help them back to work.

As per the minimum requirements of the centre we need $3500 for the staff salaries on monthly basis, $900 for the material and supply, $100 for the generator maintenance and fuel, $100 for the stationery and $120 as a communication cost while the monthly total comes to: $4720. The centre will stop the production of the artificial limbs for persons with disabilities if we have been unable to get bridge funding and then this is a clear case that persons with disabilities from Kunar and Nuristan provinces will suffer a lot. The Disability and Rehabilitation Department of the DRD is very much interested to financial support the clinic but will take some time to move this centre into the Ministry of Public Health system and that’s why need bridge funding to sustain until that time.

NOW you are hereby kindly requested to either extend your kind financial support so that we can at least have artificial limbs for persons with disabilities to independently walk or forward this email to the people in your mailing list who might be able to assist us. Your early reply to this will be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Dear Ms. Zulaikha Rafiquel!

Hope that you will be in good health.
