Reports and Other Research on People with Disabilities in Developing Countries
Researchers often want to see existing information about people with disabilities. Disabled people’s organizations (DPOs) also find it helpful to reference official documented sources of information when they seek funding support. Some of the following may lead to useful links:
- UNICEF has released a summary report on Violence Against Disabled Dhildren.
- The Innocenti Research Center at UNICEF Innocenti Digest on Promoting the Rights of Children with Disabilities
- The World Bank has published a survey of poverty assessments among people with disabilities and their implications
- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has published a report: A Human Rights-Based Approach to Education for All
- The World Disasters Report (2007): Focus on Discrimination examines how discrimination can put vulnerable groups at risk during disaster. Includes a full chapter on people with disabilities. By the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
- The Report: State of Disabled People’s Rights in Kenya 2007 focuses on the human rights status of people with disabilities in Kenya.
- “Hear Our Voices: A Global Report: People with an Intellectual Disabilities and their Families Speak Out on Poverty and Exclusion” can help readers better understand what poverty and exclusion mean for people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
- The Atlas: Global Resources for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities: 2007 presents global data on resources and services available–or not available–to people with intellectual disabilities around the world.
- Report on Disabled People in Zimbabwe
- World Bank Report on Disabled people in India
- A report on research capacity on mental health in low- and middle-income countries was published by the Global Forum for Health Research on Mental Health Day in October 2007.
- The International Labour Organization (ILO) published a report on employment and people with disabilities, which calls for more active and sustained efforts to increase the employment of people with disabilities.

- Rehabilitation International has produced a special issue focused on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
- The United Nations has launched a new, monthly newsletter about disability-related activities in the various United Nations agencies. You can either read it on-line or subscribe via email for free.

Tips and Leads for How to Find More Academic Research, Papers, Resources, or Statistics
Looking for academic research and academic papers; resources that can be used by people working in the field; or sources of statistics? Some of the following posts may be helpful:
- The UNICEF web site on child disability has some data relevant to the topic.
- The Disability Kenya web site has news, opinion pieces, and some helpful resources including a model of a successful funding grant proposal, and health-related information including HIV/AIDS and rape.
- An organization has launched a survey about the process of signing or ratifying the international disability rights treaty (CRPD) in seven European countries. The report on the survey will be published at a seminar in Helsinki in May, 2008.
- As of mid-February, 2008, one researcher has been conducting a survey on HIV/AIDS among people with disabilities in Jamaica.
- A publication entitled Human Rights Africa has news and feature articles on human rights issues among persons with disabilities in Africa.
- An on-line tool makes it easier to research the human rights record of various businesses toward people with disabilities
- The Review of Disability Studies: An International Journal has published a number of articles of interest over the years.
- Find information on disability-related laws and policies around the world.

- Numbers Don’t Feed People–Or Do They? On finding statistics relevant to disabled people in developing countries
