I am Andrea Shettle, editor of the We Can Do blog where you recently left a comment. (Your comment is included below, with the URL for where you had left it.)

Thank you for your interest. However, please understand that there is no association between We Can Do and the many conferences, opportunities, resources, organizations, etc. publicized at the blog. We Can Do is merely a conduit for passing along information from a great many sources. The fact that an opportunity or resource is publicized at We Can Do is not an indication that I am qualified to answer specific questions about it. We Can Do is NOT an organization and is NOT a funding source. It is only an INFORMATION resource.

Instead, please note that each blog post should have a link to an official web site with further details about the events or resources in which you are interested. (Or if there is no web link, then usually some other contact information should be provided, such as an email address.) To pursue these opportunities or obtain these publications etc, you should therefore please follow the relevant links given in the blog post. The official site will provide more details and information than is possible to give in my abbreviated blog posts, including instructions for the appropriate way in which to communicate with the organizers directly or to apply for their opportunities.

Apologies for using a form letter. We Can Do is operated entirely by one person --me. And I do this entirely in my own free time, outside of my many other activities, with zero budget. Consequently, I have limited time for responding to individual inquiries.

Thank you, and good luck with your endeavors,

Andrea Shettle, MSW ashettle@patriot.net wecando.wordpress.com

I am Andrea Shettle, editor of the We Can Do blog where you recently left a comment. (Your comment is included below.)

Thank you for your interest. However, please understand that there is no association between We Can Do and the many conferences, opportunities, resources, organizations, etc. publicized at the blog. This blog is NOT an organization. We Can Do is merely a conduit for passing along information from a great many sources. It is operated entirely by one person --me. And I do this entirely in my own free time, outside of my many other obligations. I receive zero funding for this activity and have zero funding of my own. Consequently, I am unable to assist directly or respond to individual inquiries. Instead, I encourage you to explore the We Can Do blog on your own at http://wecando.wordpress.com to find the information or resources that interests you.

If you are looking for relevant We Can Do blog posts announcing a conference, training opportunity, or other event to attend, check

http://wecando.wordpress.com/conferences-events-call-for-papers- training-opportunities/

If you are looking for relevant blog posts on resources, toolkits, or funding opportunities, try:

http://wecando.wordpress.com/resources-toolkits-and-funding/

And you can find many more fundraising tools and funding sources at:

http://disabilityrightsfund.org/resources-fundraising.html

If you are looking for information on a very specific topic, either check the pull-down menu under "Categories" (in the navigation bar to the near right) for the thematic topic that interests you, or try a key word search in the search engine at the top right-hand side of the page.

For more tips on how to locate the information you need at the We Can Do blog site, read:

http://wecando.wordpress.com/navigating-we-can-do/

Still can't find what you want at the We Can Do blog site? Try these two suggestions:

1. Consider subscribing yourself to We Can Do so that you can receive an email alert each time the blog site is updated with something new. Instructions for how to do this on your own are at:

http://wecando.wordpress.com/subscribe-to-we-can-do/

2. Try exploring some of the many web sites for disability-oriented organizations around the world in the blog roll, at the very bottom of the page. Perhaps some other website will offer information that We Can Do does not have at this time.

Please note that each We Can Do blog post should have a link to an official web site with further details about the events or resources in which you are interested. (Or if there is no web link, then usually some other contact information should be provided, such as an email address.) To pursue these opportunities, you should therefore please follow the relevant links given in the blog post. The official site will provide more details and information than is possible to give in my abbreviated blog posts, including instructions for the appropriate way in which to contact the organizers directly or to apply for their opportunities. All applications, appeals, queries, etc. should please be directed to the organization sponsoring the event or opportunity that interests you, not to We Can Do.

Apologies for using a form letter. We Can Do is operated entirely by one person --me. And I do this entirely in my own free time, outside of my many other activities, with zero budget. Consequently, I have limited time for responding to individual inquiries.

Thank you, and good luck with your endeavors,

Thank you for your interest. However, please understand that there is no association between We Can Do and the many conferences, opportunities, resources, organizations, etc. publicized at the blog.
Down’s Syndrome Association of Uganda ( Dosau)is a National Christian based Organization formed 1999 and got registered year 2000 as a non- profit making, non- denominational but a Voluntary Organization limited by guarantee.

Down’s syndrome Association of Uganda (Dosau) is a charity organization founded with a vision of identifying, caring for and serving people born with Down syndrome, also affected with HIV/AIDS, orphans of Hiv/Aids, its aims is also helping the families they live in at all level.

The Association aims to bring together all people born with Down Syndrome, Hiv/Aids who have got learning disability and impairment of some sort purposely to have a common voice on support , care and promoting their rights and equal opportunity.

Down’s Syndrome Association of Uganda (Dosau) was founded by four founder Members, the Association started with 35 Subscription Members , 20 children born with Down syndrome and 20 parents and relatives of people born with Down syndrome; now the Association has registered 2,534 people born with Down syndrome, 1,034 born with Down syndrome and affected with HIV/Aids, 1,500 born with Down syndrome only; 450 people with physical disabilities, 750 children orphans of Hiv/Aids and Eastern Uganda war of cattle rustling and Kony’s rebels who also attacked the area.

The Association is a Member ship Association and now has 175 Subscription Members and 7,564 ordinary members who are parents and relatives of people born with Down syndrome, physical disability, affected with Hiv/Aids and war orphans.
50 Employed staff, 73 Volunteers 97 School going from the time Dosau started its operations in Uganda.

The Member ship to the organization is open to ordinary, individuals, Instutions, Organizations, Clubs, Schools, Colleges and Universities and groups of person involved in helping people born with Down syndrome, also affected with Hiv/Aids in Uganda.

Profile of Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra 21 chromosome resulting in the disrupt of growth of the developing baby. It is named after John Langdon Down the British doctor who described the syndrome 1866, the disorder was identified as extra chromosome 21 by Jerome Lejeune in 1959; the condition is characterized by a combination of major and minor differences in structure. Often Down syndrome is associated with some impairment of cognitive ability physical growth as well as facial appearance; Down syndrome in a baby can be identified with amniocentesis during pregnancy or at birth.

In Uganda people born with Down syndrome all have learning disability and impairment of some sort. Children have significant hearing problem and problem with vision are even more common. Chances of developing thyroid disease, senile dementia and heart problems are relatively high.

Accurate figures of the number of people born with Down syndrome and also affected with Hiv/Aids who have learning disability and impairment of some sort have not been accurate. It is in recent years when Dosau is attempting to record babies from 2 years up to 36 years born with Down syndrome and also affected with Hiv/Aids in Dosau operation areas in Uganda.

The number of babies born with Down syndrome each year in Uganda is certainly high with probably 1 in 1000 of babies born have Down syndrome. This occurs in families from all social, economic, cultural, religious and racial back ground.
People born with Down syndrome, Hiv/Aids and PWDS in Uganda are neglected by their parents/relative and communities because of negative attitude, cultural beliefs most of which are suspected to guilty, for example in most Ugandan tribes, producing a child with PWD is associated with witchcraft, sexual immorality, parents have not attended to the spirits of ancestors, a curse from God; hence calling for awareness intervention so that people’s attitude can change and include PWDS at all level.
Reluctance or unwillingness of some societies to integrate them in the mainstream of Education, Employment, Health, inclusion in policy decision making, conductive environment such as accessible building, toilets, geographical location, others are locked inside the houses, others who are to say something can’t be allowed to contribute because of the negative attitudes already developed; hence, found it necessary for general awareness so that they can know that disability is not inability.
The project is necessary to bring back all PWDS who have been bounded by poverty, staying along streets begging, those who have no chance of sharing knowledge and skills with the rest of the members since they are perceived as useless people who can’t perform any activity, it’s against this back ground that made Dosau to come up with this
Down’s syndrome Association of Uganda (Dosau) trained mobilizers oppose for photos from Dosau operation areas.

Hi
I'm from Solomon Islands in the Oceania/Pacific region. Having browse through your website, I think that there is hope for the children in my country. My organisation is working with the remote rural village communities in education and other community projects that can help the people to move a step above their poverty line. Can my Community Base Organization (CBO) have access to your funding?

Hello,

I just wanted to add a potential health resource for facilitators and educators of the Deaf. During our time as Peace Corps volunteers in Kenya, we developed a interactive HIV/AIDS quiz developed to teach Deaf Kenyans. For those doing HIV/AIDS education and have access to a computer, this tool might be a great supplement to your curriculum. It is a free product and we would even be happy to mail you a CD version as with all the videos it's a big download. To learn more about it visit: http://smartquiz.mindfulinteractive.com

Enjoy, Mark

Andrea Shettle, MSW ashettle@patriot.net wecando.wordpress.com

Good to read about your actions.
I am a nurse, and have a lot experience with disabeled children and teach nurses how to make more contact with them.
My husband is working at the Dutch Embassy and I have time and energy to do something...
Perhaps you can give me possibilities to get involved, here in Maputo..
