Conference Announcement: Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Emergency Situations
Experience from humanitarian emergency situations in recent years, especially the lessons learnt from the Tsunami disaster, have proven that persons with disabilities are insufficiently included in emergency response activities. Hence persons with disabilities are amongst the most vulnerable groups in emergency situations and are disproportionately affected by negative consequences of disasters and conflict.
Due to this situation the recently approved UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities targets with article 11 specifically on Situations of Risk and Humanitarian Emergencies saying that states parties “shall take […] all necessary measures to ensure the protection and safety of persons with disabilities in situations of risk, including situations of armed conflict, humanitarian emergencies and the occurrence of natural disasters”.
How this is materialised in prevention planning and implementation of intervention strategies will be presented and discussed at the International Conference on “Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Emergency Situations” taking place on the 7th and 8th of November 2007 at the Gustav-Streseman-Institute in Bonn/Germany. The Conference is jointly co-organised by Disability and Development Cooperation (bezev), Caritas Germany, Christian Blind Mission (CBM), Deutscher Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, Handicap International and Kindernothilfe.
